If you are looking at an 02 SD, test drive it carefully! let it warm up properly, while driving, hold the RPM's at just over 2000 (about 58 mph in 4th). listen to for a resonance (moaning) sound. I don't know if this is true for SE's or older models. There is no TSB for this yet (knowing LR there never may be).

And.......?

What is this ill-fated moaning supposed to signify? Also, if it's 2002, you've got 50K of warranty......

PS - not really in the market for one - but the anon mystery post piqued my curiosity.

warranty doesn't do you a bit of good. If they don't acknowledge the flaw with a tsb, they will not fix it, especially if other vehicles are doing it also. I becomes a "normal" condition, regardless of how embarrassing and annoying such a fault can be.

Thanks for the tip. I'm not in the market for a new Landy, but as consumers we need to watch out for eachother. I wish someone had given us a warning before we bought and ACE equiped SE. Believe me, I know how annoying persistent noises can be.

Ok, so is it just a noise or will some thing break. If it's just a noise then who cares. Every car is going to make some noise later on in life any way. If you put a roof rack on it and some mud tires you are probably not going to notice an noise at all.. So what does that moaning noise mean. Truck going to blow up or some thing? Just wondering?

why would an SD make it for 02, but no other Disco II?? nothing has changed for 02 other than cupholders and homelink? these trucks make noises..period. maybe its the tbox? does it do it at 2000 rpms standing still or just at "58" mph as anon suggested. if it is just a moving "moaning", its probably the tbox. and yes..ACE is ridiculously noisy.

That's the same type sound I had at about 65 mph, and it was my T box. I have an '01 SE (no ACE)....

Yeah, I noticed immediately when I test drove the ACE equipped Disco how noisy it was ...Silly, but that was what I found most annoying about it.

I guess if it is a noise, it's going to bother you or it isn't. if noises bother you, you probably don't need a landrover. My 02 SD makes this noise. It occurs at about 2050 RPM regardless of gear. pulling away from a stop sounds pretty funny with a moan coming and going as the engine passes through this rpm going up the gears. I told the dealer about it and was told that the other ones on thier lot do it as well as the truck the service rep drives, "so it must be normal". Somewhat self serving logic but a typical LR answer. They are also trying to find a pop in my front suspension which so far has proven elusive, they seem to be trying very hard to trouble shoot it. Can't fault thier effort.

I know that this thread is old but i had to reply. I too have a Disco 01 no ACE and my truck was making a god awful noise. I drove like this for 9 months, did it right out of the shrowroom. After coming from my 98 LSE I thought that this noise was just normal.

The noisey would happen all the time even if the truck was in park and just at a idel. Any I finally couldnt take it anymore after the headaches. The dealer changed to power steering pump. Now its just a noise NORMAL Disco 2 :) :)

Thought I would toss in my .02 cents
