Hands down the least reliable site that I (try) to regularly visit.
What's wrong. Love it (site)/ Hate it (service).
By Axel Haakonsen (Axel) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 04:50 am: Edit |
There have been poweroutages in Alabama where the server is, caused by the recent tornados down there. Shit happens. Reality check: Access to this site is FREE. Hosting it is not.
By gp (Garrett) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 04:52 am: Edit |
Hmmm. I am on overly frequent user of the site and have issues maybe once every 2 weeks or so. but that is about it.
like in the previous thread about this......it is their hobby. if the site is down once in a while we will all be ok........least i think so.
maybe TCarr if you were not downloading so much porn you could access the site a little better.
just a thought. usually helps for me.

I have never had a problem.
By Axel Haakonsen (Axel) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 05:18 am: Edit |
Also, considering that this site averages 3,500 hits/hour Yes, per HOUR, I think the server is holding up pretty good....
By Eric N (Grnrvr) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 05:39 am: Edit |
Ok with that many hits, you have many, many lurkers here since there is only really a small number of people that post compared to your number of hits. So lurkers say hello some time.

I am on D-WEB alot...but not too much, I have never had any problems with it
By KJ on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 05:41 am: Edit |
I rarely have trouble accessing DiscoWeb. If you have trouble, check your own ISP first. I have two ISPs because at some point or the other one of them is usually acting doggy on any given day. Go ahead, laugh, yeah, I have two ISPs....

I'll probably get tossed from my job cause I just leave it up all day and read post in between making network changes and such. I'm sure I have a VP looking over a report of my net usage putting my name on the next round of lay offs list.

Dweb is FREE info, FREE ideas, FREE entertainment. When they start to charge then you bitch about the service. Until then "beggers can't be chosers". Go to the J**P forum and hang out there.
Plus it is the INTERNET. All internet sucks, just like you and I breath air, you car uses gas, and INTERNET SUCKS. It is just part of the deal.

By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 01:16 pm: Edit |
Uh,
I keep a browser window open on D-Web, and reload it about every 15 minutes all day at work when I'm in the office... don't have an internet connection in my state vehicle (yet! )
Yes, I'm a D-web addict.....
A couple of weeks ago there was some problems with regularity, but since, it's almost always clinkin' along just fine.... no problemos from my point-of-view....
Ho, Axel, Kyle.... great job!

leslie. having some regularity problems today? sorry to hear about it. having flashbacks of Slim Pickins in the movie 1941. the bathroom scene when the japenese are trying to make him crap out a compass from a cracker jack box. sorry.
By Leslie N. Bright (Leslie) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 01:55 pm: Edit |
LOL!!!
No, THAT'S just fine today, thank you very much!
'Course, that really puts a spin on telling the D-Web Three that they're doing a great job, eh?
LOL!

I've been wondering about this myself. I access DWeb irregularly throughout the day and usually at night (after 11pm EST) and I encounter access problems about 25% of the time.
And to those of you harping on the DWeb is Free line, you need to chill. I don't think TCarr's posting was trying to attack Ho or Axel, but rather to bring to their attention that there are access problems that do occur.
Ho and Axel do provide the DWeb to us out of their own pockets and I think it's important for them to know if there are service disruptions or slow-downs for whatever reason. As someone who funds another internet site, I too want to know if there are service disruptions so I can work with our ISP to correct any problems.

That's what the "Feedback to DiscoWeb" page is for...

I know very well the problems Jay , no notification needed... And its a hobby not a neccesity.... Thats the reality. Ho and I were joking the other day about pushing the power button on the server...

Perhaps Lucas made our server.
By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 03:10 pm: Edit |
Er I probably do at least half of those 3500 hits / hour. So am I a lurker most of the time?
By Bill Bettridge (Billb) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 03:13 pm: Edit |
Kyle - pushing the power button?! - Jesus H Christ man - if you did that, it'd be like the stock crash - people would be jumping out windows and off bridges! LOL

That just means that someone would have to make a Discoweb2.com
By Ed H on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 05:27 pm: Edit |
I am sure many of us have been benefited a great deal by this site. If not for this site, I would have junked my 96 a long time ago instead of investing more money into it (bad example). I did enjoy my disco alot more than before. Anyway, I think a yearly membership fee is acceptable.
By Kyle on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 05:30 pm: Edit |
Ed , we arent looking for that. WE certainly dont want members.. We try to have some items on sale so you get something for your money . We would just like any that complain to remember its our hobby and we have pay for it ourselves. The site is pretty damn stable considering the traffic it gets..

Yes, I know it's free and a hobby, I didn't do the 'feedback' routine cause i wanted to see if others had the prolem. Usually access d/web at nite and last nite never could get beyond the bb index. Same thing 2 nites ago. And maybe 20-25% of the time I try to get on otherwise, I can't.
And it's (I don't think) my server as the other sites i regularly visit were fine.
Not screaming and hollering, just frustrated, it is my favorite site.

Push the power button??? OH MY GOD, NOOOOOOO!!! ... I would have to start cooking, and .. cleaning my house again, and paying attention to my husband and offspring, and, ... and, .. it's just unthinkable!! Nooooooooo ....
I've sometimes had problems getting access a bit later at night, but I always figured they were just blocking me out, because that's when I'm more likely to post while I'm "drinkin' and drivin' Discoweb" ... yeah, whenever I get a little "liquored up" now, the first thing I do is head for a computer muttering about Discoweb ...
Hi, my name is Kim ....

One thing I've noticed about the outages, is that dweb has been unavailable when the clock strikes 10 pm PST. But other then that, DISCOWEB is a great site! Thanks Ho, Kyle and Axel!
By Axel Haakonsen (Axel) on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 09:31 pm: Edit |
10pm PST is midnight Alabama time, that's when the server turns into a pumpkin...
By Kyle on Thursday, November 29, 2001 - 09:32 pm: Edit |
Someone check it tonight for us and see if its still doing it. A change was made yesterday to try and stop that from happening...just post in this thread in the AM...

Has anybody thought about mirroring this site for redundancy? Long live DISCOWEB!!!

Not sure if redundancy is a good idea. That would mean two Kyles. Not sure if redundancy is a good idea. That would mean two Kyles.

I tell you what Ax, Ho and Kyle,
If I could change that DISCOWEB logo at the top to my own one, for example "Borland Technical Pages", and take out that Moab rover on the left, then I could spend ALL day on this site.
Well, actually, I DO spend all day on this site, I just feel guilty about it

Kyle-
Not a necessity?????
The D-Web that the three of you have created has become more than just a simple internet website for foolish Discovery owners (count me as a fool).
It has become an internet Shrine. A mecca of sorts for the wary Disco owner, Land Rover Aficionado and travelling X-Terra enthusiast.
D-Web is more necessary than Crystal Methamphetamine and even more addictive!
Aloha from Honolulu, Hawaii where I have never seen modded Discos.
By EricRat on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 01:30 pm: Edit |
Someone was telling me the other day that their sister is having Disco blues, and didn't know what to do. I said "get her to DISCOWEB", we'll set it to rights!".
I might preach DISCOWEB! I have 4 D web stickes on the truck!
Seriously, if you need some Quality of service stats on the site I can thow up a monitor and report uptime stats, response time and all that good stuff.

Hey I like the mirrored site idea! What kind of bandwidth is reserved for the current Discoweb site? As for the observation on the 10 pm witching hour (PST) I notice that consistently. I'm guessing some sort of indexing or backup sequence is hosing the server....too many cpu cycles and the www service goes kaput.....assuming the server runs windoze!
Rover newbie (and very impressed at that)
PS Awesome site and a true public service. The fact it goes down less than Monica Lewinsky is a minor annoyance and after all the Discoweb is FREE and greatly appreciated..kudos to the sysadmins!

Kyle - Just plug the server back in when your toaster oven goes 'Ding!' This, along with buying a power strip so you can run the toaster oven AND the server at the same time should solve everything ;) Why should we suffer just cause you want Toaster Strudel ?

Is anybody interested in a more feature rich web forum / bulletin board site that would Series x, Range Rovers, Disco I, Disco II and Freelander??? I would have the server in a controled environment (systems room) with a DS3 connection to the internet and have it be apart of a cluster, hey this is what I do for a profession.
I have been toying with the idea for awhile now but would like to hear some feedback.

Rover,
I dunno. I barely have time to mine DiscoWeb, let alone anywhere else. I love this site and am struggling as it is to just read the new categories here.
