Which year and model NAS Disco is overall the best? I want the year with the "good" tranny and the valves that dont foul. Should I avoid ACE ? I just need to know which Disco I should use as my stock base to get into Discos. Thanks!

IMO, get a '98 or one of the '99 SD (last of the Series I models)...

Then, use good gas, and drive it like you stole it.

The best year is the one that you own outright...

98 98 98 how many times to I hafta tell u.

last year of a model is no good as some of the guys on the line know that they are inherently untrainable and will be laid-off when the model changes and stop 'caring'. the year before the model change (1998) the guys on the line don't know that they are toast and they like their job - so BEST YEAR

But w/ the Disco, they made Series I Discos until they switched and started making Series II Discos in late '98.... the '99 Disco is really a left-over '98 Disco, one of the last ones before the assembly-line was converted over.... shouldn't have been any layoffs associated w/ the shift from I to II....

Avoid end of year, avoid end of week, avoid Monday build dates, etc. I've heard all the crap before. Bad builds happen ALL during the production cycle. Perhaps the Wednesday afternoon shift manager is weaker then the Friday guy. Are the night guys better managed then the AM guys? After 7 years in factory management, I refuse to believe you're ever safe. At any day, at any time, your lines will screw up and screw up badly.

Try to find the best vehicle in your budget. Set a realistic $ in your mind, make sure you budget for new tires, suspension, plugs, brakes, etc. and try to pick the vehicle with the best maintainace record, etc. Buying used is a crap shoot. There is a reason someone is selling the truck. Hopefully, it's not one that will bite you on the ass later on.

As for the year, it's all subjective. Do you think we're going to call the model year we bought bad? Whose going to admit they goofed or didn't do their homework before they threw down their cash?

Hey Jeff - it was just a little humour

Chris, that wasn't directed at you. I was reading the same thread on the techinical page and replied here. We (the board) always get into this arguement over build quality, etc. I wasn't attacking your post.

Sorry if it came out that way.

the board = Disco Web.

Everytime someone inquires about "buying a used Disco", the same debate pops up over which year is the best, when not to buy, etc.
