I'm confused!

I'm shopping for tires and I think I narrowed it down to these:

bfg mud
BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM

bfg mud radial
BF Goodrich Radial Mud Terrain T/A

dunlop
Dunlop Radial Mud Rover

Can anybody tell me what the difference is between the first two BF Goodrich? Any feedback about these tires will be greatly appreciated! BTW, the size I'm looking at is 235/85 R16. I'm hoping to get OME 2" springs in the next month or so.

Oh, one last thing, any good places to buy from? (local or internet)

Thanks again...

-glenn

Glenn: 235/85/16 is a good size. BFG's are great tires. But I would not rule out the Futuras from Pep Boys. They are rebadged Cooper tires, and are sold at a big discount. Great value.

The BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A KM is the improved version of the BF Goodrich Radial Mud Terrain T/A.

Cost aside, I would go with those over the Dunlops.

Typical lowest internet prices are at http://tirerack.com. If you have a Discount Tire near you, find your best price then go there. They typically will beat anyones price.

glenn

to make you more crazy -

here is my short list

pirelli scorpion mt
bridgestone mt
futura mt

i ended up with the bridgies - but was about to buy the pirellis ($91ea?) the bridgies are the highest rated mt's on the tire rack site.

bfg's are #9? - do yourself a favour and read the comments on the tires - alot of these guys have bought more than one brand.

the only thing bfg has going for it is the triguard sidewall - though there were some who were complaining about the lugs getting cut up on silly things.... some guys swear by them

i really like my bridgies....

$0.02

Glenn - remember the mud? Those were the KMs Still managed to get them stuck though recently :(

Sidewalls have better tred on the KMs. But I'm not too impressed with the performenace (sic) on road.

I have the Dunlop's, it seems the coupound is really hard. I had a hard time on big rocks last summer and they weren't real good in the snow. I had them siped a couple weeks ago and now they're pretty damned good all around tire (no rocks yet, but good in snow). Don't know how soft the BFG's are but there was a sale on the BFG's on some tire shop, like $106/tire... can't think of the damned cite now though. (I think www.etires.com not sure though).

Axel, I went to Pepboys' website, is it the Futura Enforcer you're talking about? That's the only tire there that has aggressive tread. It looks good for the value. I got the okay from the wife to get some "stuff" but not to go crazy. I'm sure everyone's familiar with this predicament I'm in.

This guy in Philly is selling me 4 steelies for 200 bucks. If I go with BFG Mud T/A's, that's 524 for four - which brings my total two 724 and I will have to sets of tires. (existing alloys and XPC plus the new set of steelies and the new tire purchase) Which is still pretty okay, budgetwise. However, if I go with the futuras, I might be able to sneak in the springs!

HELP!

BTW, thanks for all the advise! Or should I say confusing me further! I will post pics as soon as I get them! Dean, we can try that mudhole in the barrens again!

Steve, you're the Steve that had 235/85 16 with stock suspension right? Did you ever lift your truck?

Dean, are they loud on road? After reading all your posts, I guess bridgies and futuras are cool contenders too. I'm still waiting to hear from Pepboys for the price on futuras. Stupid guys kept me on hold on the phone for the past 15 minutes! I'm hanging up!

I guess it'll all boil down to value. So, once I have all the prices for all my choices, It should be easier to decide. Thanks again for all your advise!

glenn,

price for 4 futuras after mounting, balancing, handling fees, warranty (5 a tire), sales tax, TIRE tax, [and presumably] "i'm a dumb shit behind a counter and therefore must ask you 50 times if the tires will fit" fee ..... comes to about $480.00.
as far as performance goes, it's really down to personal preference (i wish i went with a more conventional size). if you want, we can organize an outing for this weekend and you can test them for yourself before you commit to the purchase. and the noise, they started out quiet (extremely quiet for the type of tire) but after some wear (about 5k miles worth) they got loud, however with the roofrack tire noise is really not an issue.

if you have any other questions feel free to give me a call.

Glenn,

Nope, not much noise at all, although you can feel a little more roughness. But its definitely NOT like the cheaps w/boggers pounding down the highway.

I might go for the futuras next time, just for a change. But I'll miss the side tread.

Glenn,

I got the Dunlop MTs a couple of months ago, 235/85, set of of five and steel wheels from Tirerack. Total hit, delivered, was, I think, $750-$800. They're around 32", same diameter as Dean's, but narrower. Look real good on the truck. I don't wear them full-time, got them after sliding all over the place at MAR in October and taking some body damage.

Can't compare them to BFGs or Futuras performance-wise, but I think they're all pretty good tires. I was looking at Dean's KMs last time we went to the Barrens and his have some nice side tread the others don't, which probably gives some advantages. Whichever ones you get, you'll be amazed at the difference they make in the mud. Of course you can still get stuck (ask Dean), but the difference over stock is great. I went through some mudholes in a second trip to VA I wouldn't have sniffed at in the stock tires.

I don't have any rubbing issues, but the lift may help with that. Dean doesn't have a lift (yet) but he figured out some trick with the wheel well that did away with a lot of his.

Couple of things: You'll notice a definite power loss, spend more time in third than normal, and you'll have to either invert or modify the spare carrier to make a 235 fit.

Kent
