I'm looking for a good set of night vision binoculars (or a Monocular).

They need to be fairly light, with a 4+ zoom on them.

Oh - cost is a big factor too. As always

Any recommendations appreciated.

horness -

avoid any soviet 1st gen junk - sold under various names "night owl" - "cyclops" etc. these will allow you so see you kitty at about 5 meters - only shapes beyond that.

2nd gen is more but significantly better 3rd or gen 2+ sorta neck and neck. gen 4 is what they are using in afganistan.

are you looking for a weapsons sight or something to peeka boo in the bush with ?

Didn't realise the Night Owl stuff was so bad (a friend is getting me some trade prices).

Any info on the 1,2,3,4 gen stuff would be appreciated - web sites etc.

I'm looking for a peeka boo set of binoculars, or a monocular, don't mind.
As long as it's got good magnification, and a cut off when bright light hits it (to save frying the innards).

I have a Dipol D-2MV which is a Gen 1+ Russian made one. It isn't that bad. They work pretty good. They suck compared to gen 3 but, then a set of gen 3s will cost you any where from $2500 and up. Gen 1s you can get pretty cheap. If your are going to use them often then get the gen 3 but, if you are going to just play around with them then I would get gen 1 or gen 2.
