Josh & Erik-
Hi guys, I saw your notes and wanted to find out if you'd like another Disco to join you on an outting. I have a '95 Disco and live in South Jersey. I don't have anyone to play with and I don't know where to go for fun. If you'd like an extra Disco to join, please give me a response..

Hey if you guys go on a trip to the barrens, please give me a holler! I'm in North Jersey, Bergen County area exit 162 off the GSParkway(home of the infamous Bada-Bing club). I think Axel is from Jersey as well. Saw his truck with the Jersey plates in the photogallery.

Hey Glenn, I don't own a Disco but I do have a RR. I just moved to Rockland County (Tappan) and plan on making a trip up to CT or Wurtsboro. We usually go up with a group of other LR owners. Let me know if you'd like to come along.

Later.

Hey there John! Nice to hear from a fellow Rover enthusiast from my area. How often do you go? I have to tell you that my Disco is bone stock. Although I've been to a few offroad events (usually dealer stuff and dirt tracks that atv and dirt bike people use) I haven't been to any hard core stuff like most of the pics in Discoweb. Anyway, I guess you gotta start somewhere. Let me know when you guys plan to go, I might be able to join you. Thanks a lot!

Glenn, we try to go once or twice a month. I haven't been out since May (Pine Barrens), moving has taken up alot of my time.

Most of the trails we do are mild to hard. You shouldn't have a problem with a stock Disco, plus there is always a "go-around".

Here's a link to some of my pics:

Hi all, (Aug 11, 2001)
How's about we meet at the pine barrens (Wharton State Park) some time soon? Plenty of flat boring roads, but there are also plenty of death-puddles to negotiate and a small but steep hill. Expect to get dirty - bring waders. Stock LRs would be absolutely fine, although I did swamp my air filter once and stall (lack of water experience).

I have been there a few times only, but I would recommend waiting for the next tropical storm to hit us a few days earlier.

Personally I prefer Saturdays, but Sundays fine too.

Here's a link to the last time I was there:

Kent, Carl, Dominick, SOLO, Chris, Axel, anyone else I forgot.

Wow, if we all went on a day run that wold be greeeeeaaaaaaaaat.

Since nobody has offered to lead this trip, perhaps I can. Bear in mind that my new Disco2 has many scratches all over, although I am pretty sure most are only in the wax. We will almost certainly hit deep mud puddles at least up you your headlights in places, but they are only short. And phew - what a wif they give off!

There is a short hill around 30 degrees we can try, and in the rain it might be a bit difficult. An Isuzu rodeo could get up with enough momentum, but the disco was way cool (stop at steepest point, have a look around, continue on, etc).

Most of the trails are completely flat, so be warned its nothing too amazing. But the area is very natural and fun. Bring insect repellent!

We could set a weekend (one day is enough) for late August or September. Please let us know when is good for you.

It might be a good idea to bring a tarp of some kind if its been raining recently, to throw over the front. This weekend would be good (plenty of water), but I think it will be too early for some.

Guys -
This is great. Lets say one of the weekends in September. SOLO - are you sure you can't make 1/2 Sept, or 15/16 (0ne day only really)?

I spent a couple of hours yesterday plotting a course, which I have done partially, but some I have never seen, so I don't know what to expect.

Directions are (on the grand scale):
Take the Turnpike south to exit 7A (or is it 7?) which is route 206 south. Then go south for half an hour and across route 70, and a bit more, then towards Tabernacle. About 75 mins from New Brusnwick, if you know the area. (or 3 hours in late sat morning traffic, so if its saturday, lets hit the turnpike by 9.30-10am.

Anyone near me could meet locally - land rover convoys look really cool! Othersise, we could meet at the junction between 206 and 70 (a circle).

Anyone else with date limitations please let me know ASAP.

Dean

Carl/All,

I'm in Bergen County, NJ so count me in on that convoy. When we do have a date, how about we all meet up at a rest area in the turnpike maybe the one right after the 13A (Ikea) exit. I think it's somewhere between exit 12 and 11. By the way, I'm not free on September 15th (Saturday). Everything else is still good at this point. Later!

Glenn

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Thursday, August 16, 2001 - 08:08 am: Edit

Hi All,
How does September 8th sound? That's a saturday, which for me is good since I can't bear to get back to work the next day after a trip like this!

Carl - that's a good idea to meet in the turnpike rest area, that might be a plan.

If anyone else has a GPS, please bring it, as I don't want to rely solely on my one in case it dies. Since there are supposedly 500 miles of track in the forrest and I have never seen a single road sign (despite the roads all having names on my map) this is crucial.

The ranger's station in the forrest sells USGA maps at $4 a go, if anyone wants to buy some. I have four taped together, with GPS scales drawn on top for navigation.

If its raining this is no problem with me (quite the opposite), since the scratches will be less. Be sure to warn everyone that scratches are a distinct possibility. Waders are available in KMart at $30/$40 for thigh/chest highs.

If you plan to go through the deep puddles (with me) you must make sure you have a towing point front or back (if you have a receiver hitch, make sure you have a pin for it if nothing else, (Pep Boys)).

Later,

Dean

Sept 8 works for me. I'll bring a compass, and pruners to take care of the more nasty pin stripe makers. Which park entrance will we be using?

I have driven all day over there without seeing a single other car, although the major sand roads do indeed have a ranger occasionally. If we start early I think we would be done by dark, so I am not concerned with the curfew. The rangers I have spoken to have been very nice guys / girls, and encourage off-roading (but not off their tracks).
They even sell maps for you to explore the place!

Saturday 8th Sept it is then.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Saturday, August 25, 2001 - 03:59 am: Edit

Carl and all,

The rules are: Maximum 20 people in a group. No mention of max car count. But, if you write to the super, which I have, he might let you take more. So, please if you want to come try not to bring 12 kids along (not until I get a reply, if I get one).

I'd like to get a head count over the next few days. I never expected such enthusiasm (or high NJ LR owners).

Anyone near me - perhaps we can meat at the Easton Avenue STOP and SHOP parking lot at 9am? To get there, its exit 10 off the 287, heading Easton Avenue direction. Go along Easton Avenue a few lights and there'e a cinema and Stop and Shop supermarket on the right (just after JFK blvd). Park near the cinema which is usually deserted. If you need further directions, let me know.

After that, we will head down to New Brunswick and route 18 South to the NJ turnpike. We can pop into the turnpike service area on the way down, and pick up anyone there.

Then continue NJ turnpike south to exit 7, route 206 south. After about 30 mins on 206, we should hit a circle at route 70, which is where we can meet anyone else coming. There is (if I remember correctly) a group of diners and small shops there.

Last, we go south (still on 206) a few more miles and take the large left fork (648, Carranza Rd), towards Tabernacle. At the Y there is some space to park, if anyone wants to wait there instead.

We enter the park a few miles from this point.

I will do my very best to get to the route 206/70 junction by 10.30am, but please note the turnpike can be a real b@$^@%! sometimes.

I have a black disco 2, roof-rack + wrap brush bar and (assuming they seem up to it) bigger BFG MT KMs. I will wrap a yellow tow strap around my roof rack.

Ok, lets bail. Let me know please if you are coming. If you can't then I am sure we will do this again soon anyway.

But please remember, its no challenging roads, just an easy drive along sandy roads. Depending on rain there could be a few big mud puddles, that's all. Whoever's got the biggest tires goes in first, as fast as possible, to clear out all the water, ok? But seriously, I think it would be nice to meet all together.

Bring a picnic for lunch.

If we cannot get a permit for more than 20 people, then we'll have to think about what to do to limit this head count.

Later,
Dean

Excellent news - I just got a call from the super at Wharton State Forrest, and got the all-clear to bring as many as we want. All welcome - kids will love it too.

I just scouted the route yesterday, to make sure there are no road closures or other problems.

Here are a few photos to let you know what to expect. Most of the puddles will be scoutable round the side, if you don't like to swim.

Here's one from an earlier trip:
Swampy road

This one too:
mild puddle

another mild one

Testing the water depth - and no, I didn't drive through this one. The mud in this one was two feet deep suction crap that could never really be driven through (although I'm happy to be proved wrong).
scouting - this one's too deep!

Just one of a few nice areas to stop and see the view. Dead trees in a flooded lake. Spooky!

Remember Sept 8th.

That's very interesting Dean. Looking forward to the trip. However, (Unfortunately ) I have to be home between 6 and 7 p.m. for a "family affair". What time frame are we looking at? Since I might have to bail out earlier, when you're deep into the trails, is coming back to the main roads "easy" or do you have to back track a whole day's worth of trails? By the way, I'm going with my wife and my 6 year old son in our bone stock disco.

Carl are you coming from Manhattan? If you are, maybe the first rest area in the turnpike is a good place to start. (Between exit 18 and 16 - I think) John I think that'll be great for you as well.

Carl,

I don't have a CB but I have a talkabout (Motorolla). As long as the other unit is within 2 mile range it should be able to communicate. So if anybody in this trip has one, maybe we should use them. John, please contact Carl and myself about the convoy. Also, anyone from our area (North Jersey, NY) that wants to convoy, please email us.

Hey Dean,

Is that a pic of you in the water with the waders on? How do you keep the inside of your Disco clean after you make one of those mud-inspections? You realize, of course, that since you have the waders, and you're the leader of this expedition (especially since you have the new mud tires), that you get to inspect all the mud puddles!! :)

I'm really looking forward to this. I think what I'll do is meet the convoy at the 206/70 junction at around 10:30, per your earlier post. I also have to be back home early. Will there be maps of the area available where we "put in"? I couldn't tell from your post, but is that Tabernacle location anywhere close to the Atsion Ranger's office?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Monday, August 27, 2001 - 08:06 am: Edit

Guys,
I will post a 'Roster' (good idea Glenn) in the same directory as this thread. Please put your name and where you want to meet up there.

Kent - Yes that's me in the mud. I put the waders on my roof rack after wading.

John - of course RRs are welcome! But trying to keep it to Land Rover makes if possible, but no worries if a few friends come along in other makes.

Carl - coming from NY if you're on the turnpike you probably want to meet us at the service station on that road. There are two - one between exit 9 and 8A, and one between 7A and 7 (I think, close anyway). We will of course pop in to see both service stations.

Kent again - maps as far as I know are only in the Atsion Rangers station, which is about 10 miles south of where we turn off east. But we come out at the ranger's station at the end of the trip, and its open till 9pm on saturdays if you need to buy maps afterward.

Glenn - If you have to escape early, we can set you up on a road to take you out no problem.

Fill in the Roster please,

Dean

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Monday, August 27, 2001 - 08:22 am: Edit

Anyone going down the turnpike: You may know this road is always backed up, so we need to know who will be where?

Lets plan for the following:

Stop and Shop @ 9am
Turnpike service are between 9 and 8A: 9.30am
Turnpike service are between 7A and 7: 10am
206/70 10.30am
206/Carranza Road 10.40am

These are VERY VERY optimistic time, so unless we know exactly who will be where, we may miss you.

Fill in the roster please,
Dean

Ps if anyone breaks down: We will get a GPS position of your car, continue on with the journey, and then after finished (about 6pm) anyone who feels up to it can come back and tow you out / help out. Expect myself to be most likely to be towed, since Kent has kindly assigned the puddle-testing job to me! (LOL)

I can't help with breakdowns of the mechanical sort, but I do have a winch. So, if getting pulled out is all someone needs I should be able to help with that. Keep in mind I've never winched another vehicle before, only myself twice, but I'm sure it's doable. As the designated puddle-tester, Dean can do any necessary underwater hookups to trailer hitches!! ;^)

If we manage to get out early, we can always cross over route 206 into the other side of the park, and try our luck at Swamp Road, which is supposedly one of the most difficult muddy stretches. Its right adjacent to a tract of swamp. It will be only a few miles south of where we currently plan to finish. I will need to buy a map in the ranger's station at that point. There is even a trail called J**P Trail that I think we should definitely rename.

Just an idea.
