Guys,
This is continuing in from the NJ Pine Barrens Roster thread.
John C - Sullivan County sounds like a great idea, let us know some more details.
Glenn - Keep pushing Axel to get us a trip out there, it looks very interesting!
Everyone - I would be happy to make a new trip in a location close to last time, but I need time to check it out beforehand. And I need a little more time to get this WTC business settled in my head! I still feel crazy about all this stuff. Both my wife and I have strong ties with that building - both of us worked there for some time, Debs for 4 years. We had our marriage dinner in Windows on the World.
Anyway, I am planning a trip on the other side of Rt 206 from where we were; there is much swampy stuff there, and a bunch of so-called j**p trails (ha).
If anyone wants to come and check it out with me before the main trip, let me know, as I don't want to scout the swamp roads on my own. I need someone who really loves the mud! (no names, Glen) Oops.
If possible, we should all plan to hit this place in a couple of months, and preferably after heavy rain. Then we can ALL try some death-mud!
Dean
By Glenn Guinto (Glenn) on Thursday, September 27, 2001 - 03:24 pm: Edit |
Sounds interesting Dean! Although I think we should have someone with a winch if we were to trek into those death-mud. You guys know I wouldn't dare go into one of those mud pits!

Ok count me in to. For some reason mud doesn't want to stick to my truck, have to try and fix that. Sullivan County sounds interesting too, keep me posted on that.

If you need a dry truck on solid ground with a tow strap to pull you mud puppies out when stuck, add my name to the rouster.

A dry truck, Carl? I like that, might be there with you. With the winch.
BTW, where is Sullivan County?

RATS!!
Went to walk the dog this morning, and found that my truck had been hit.
Apperently, at about 2AM a drunk was flying down the road in a van and lost controll and hit about 7 cars, 3 were totaled. The driver is now locked up at the 76th. I just got some cosmetic damage, including both drivers doors and a bent spare carrier, mabe dented back door. I'm going in to the body shop later for the full work up. Nothing that would prevent me from driving.
....hey and what about those scratches at the roof line....what tree branch??
All in all, the Great Pumkin lives on (someones jeep didn't)

By John C. on Saturday, September 29, 2001 - 04:24 pm: Edit |
Kent, Sullivan county is N of Rockland county. The trail is about 65 miles N/NW from the Tappan Zee Bridge.
Carl, sorry to hear about the damage to your Disco. Maybe now is the time to take it on a hardcore trail before any body work is done.
By Kyle Beckman (Kbeckman) on Saturday, September 29, 2001 - 05:14 pm: Edit |
Guys,
I had a blast down in Barrens also. I'd be up for a trip anywhere, but preferably with trees other than pine. My paint is still feeling the scars!
Carl, glad to hear you are OK from the WTC. Sorry about your truck.

John,
Thanks for the photos, that looked like a lot of fun.
Are you sure a stock Disco II could go there?
Some day we'll have to find out.
Carl
By John Cinquegrana (John_C) on Wednesday, October 10, 2001 - 04:46 am: Edit |
Carl, yes a stock Disco will be fine. You can't really see it but there are lots of "go-arounds" to the difficult sections. I did not go thru the large rock gardens that Brian (Disco) or the Jeepers went thru.
I'm looking into a trail in Suffern. If it's do-able I'll let you guys know.

John,
Did you get my email? Hey we'd be glad to join you next time around. I don't anticipate a camping trip any time soon . Was that Brian's 4.6 monster? That looks bad-ass! (I can say bad-ass here right?) Are you going to drop yours (4.6 motor) in your classic anytime soon? Email me with the details of your next trip. Hope all is well!
Thanks!

Glen, I did get your email, sorry that I did not respond sooner. Yes that was Brian's monster.
I started taking the 4.6 apart and have not found any problems with it yet. I might wait till the spring to install it.
I think our next trip will be sometime in mid November. Let me know what weekend is good for you guys.
Later.

John,
If you're looking at the 17th (Saturday) that's cool with me. 24th (Sat) should also be okay. Sorry, I can't do Sundays since I'm the designated chaufer for my son to CCD (Sunday school). Wouldn't want my son to skip it just so I can get my off-road fix. - (the guy upstairs might give me some problems on the trails ) Anyway, I hope the schedule works out!
Hey Carl, is you're D2 fixed now? Hope everything turned out okay. See you at the trails!

Hi Glen,
Just got the truck back on Saturday. They repainted the whole thing, it'll be ashame to scratch it..Oh well!
The bodyshop convinced the insurance Co. that all the scratches were from the accident, I said "cool" but in fact they were Dean's fault. "kidding Dean ;)"
By Kyle Beckman (Kbeckman) on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 02:10 pm: Edit |
I'm having my scratches buffed out tomorrow, so I'll be ready to get a fresh set in November. Count me in. I also just put on a complete OME suspension last week, so I'd love to try it out.

By Kyle Beckman (Kbeckman) on Tuesday, October 23, 2001 - 07:51 pm: Edit |
Carl,
I like the ride so far. It feels smoother going down the road than stock. I also took off the front and rear sway bars, so there is a little more body roll, but not much. I think the lack of sway bars will be a benefit off road. Supposedly you get better articulation.

Ok, here's the story. I cannot go on Saturday because I have to take my daughter to swim class and Glenn can't go on Sundays cause he has to take his son to Sunday School....so this is what we are gonna do:
I am going up to Wurtsboro on Sunday, Nov. 11 to check out a new trail. I will be heading up there with 2 D90s (1 modified and 1 stock) and 2 RRs (1 heavily modified and 1 slightly modified). If anyone wishes to come along send me an email. I'm guessing the trail has some nice hill climbs, some rock gardens, maybe some mud holes and maybe some branches that might cause scratching.
We will have to make another trip on a Saturday (I'll try to get someone to take my daughter to swim class). Since some of you guys like mud and not rocks I think we should try to go to CT. It's a 1.5 hour ride from Tappan Zee Bridge. If you would like to see pics from my last two trips to the area email me and I'll send you the links.
Recap:
Glenn: Saturdays only
Carl: gotta watch the new paint job
Dean: likes mud
Clarance: availabel Sat or Sun
Kyle: ready to flex his stuff
Talk to you guys later.

Man, my bosses are driving me crazy today. This is the first time since this morning that I actually surfed Discoweb! Imagine that! I think I'm going to be sick - withdrawal symptoms
I like you're little "recap" there John. Too bad I have those commitments on Sundays. Although, If you're going to Wurstboro, that's probably just a 45 minute ride from me and Sunday school ends at 12:00 p.m. What exit is that from NY State thruway? I'm familiar with exit 16 which is Harriman. Maybe it's possible to meet up.
By John Cinquegrana (John_C) on Wednesday, October 24, 2001 - 04:03 pm: Edit |
It's exit 113 off of Route 17. When you get off exit 16 from 87 you go Nort/West on Route 17. At that point you are at exit 130 (Route 17). It's a good 45 min from Sloatsburg rest area.
But don't worry, we will try and setup a run on a Saturday.
Don't work too hard!

Perhaps John C. might start a new thread, rather than mixing up two trips (or three is it?) in this one - I don't mind, its just may be more clear when people start signing up.

We did the scouting mission last weekend, and it seems that the west side of route 206 is slightly different from the east. There are MANY MANY wavy roads like the few we did on the first trip. In fact, about half the journey was like that. Swamp Road was dry completely, although our resident aborigine managed to find some mud! But it had not rained for at least 3 months. The trails might well hold some very good stuff after a few weeks of continuous rain, so we'll head on over there for a peek next trip.
We managed to get through one f*&^*# narrow scratchy bastard of a road, which wasn't even on the (1922) map. However, most of us pulled through the husband-battering that accompanies such ventures. Phew.
Lets wait till there is some heavy rain, and then do a trip there. For anyone who has not been in this area, trails are EZPZ, with the most danger coming from the wife.
Here are a few rather lame photos. The night driving was a blast, and we should definitely plan on staying later than dusk (risking the fine).

By Brian Fransson (Brian) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 10:29 pm: Edit |
Yeah you're right. Come spring it should be nice, but it's such a long time to wait though. Snow this winter would make it very interesting...if it snows! Regardless I'm ready to go.

What?! You guys took your $60,000 Range Rovers through the sticks?!
And Carl - you have a new paint job! Bad Carl! - Bad!
Actually, I kinda wish I was there too, my truck needs a few more scratches Although I'm sure I'd be in the doghouse by now.
Somebody already gave me directions to that local trail up in Ringwood, NJ although I haven't tried it out yet. I'll try to see if I can go this 4-day weekend and try to take some pics...

John,
Did you do those trails? That hill on the first link is very similar to the one I'm talking about. Except the one I found is part of the pipeline that goes through, Bergen, Passaic and Rockland counties. It's off of Ramapo lake by the castle ruins. I don't know if you've heard of it but, we'll give it a shot this weekend with our rigs. I'll take some pics and let you know. Hopefully it doesn't have the same restrictions as the Mahwah one.

Forgot about Johnny Snorkel.
I'm gonna make mine from thousands of McDonald staws duct taped together ...for under $3.
I'll show that Toyota guy!
By John Cinquegrana (John_C) on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 02:28 pm: Edit |
Glen, I've done the trail at least 4 or 5 times before. I have not been back there since Feb of this year because of the restrictions. Yep, pipeline. I heard that the local authorities were trying to get rid of the quads in the area and that's why they distributed the flyers. I'll send you some more info via email. Let me know what day you are heading up there, I might be available.
Also, I have a trail in Suffern but we might have to scout it with our mountain bikes first. My neighbor runs it with his dirt bike and he's not sure if we can run it with our Rovers. Maybe we'll take a ride with him on our bikes. Let me know what you think.
By Guy Pineda on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 07:36 pm: Edit |
Hey guys! This my first post on this site. I have been following some of it for a couple of weeks now and all I can say is, when is the next trip so I can tag along!!
I am new Disco 2 owner and only have taken my rig (see, now I have a rig to call my own!!:-) out on that trail in Suffern where the dirt bikers and ATVers go to. It seems pretty cool but I did not want to wander far because I was by myself and not familiar with the restrictions.
I did get my first scratch there but not from the trail but from one of the 'f'ing ATVers. I think they got pissed that I was in the way and he peeled out next to me sending rocks flying at my truck.
BTW, I am Glenn's cousin. His director's title seems to leave him lots of time to surf Discoweb. Not like some of us working stiffs!
Dean: I was with Glenn at the Paul Miller event. Nice meeting you.
Guy
By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 10:13 pm: Edit |
Guy - welcome to the club!
Hey, a miracle! I've been given Sunday 2nd December off while Deb's in NY. Ok boys, lets go get some more scratches
Is anyone free that day? If so post up and we've got a date. Might end up a bit of a scouting mission again, coz I've not been that far south before.
Can't wait to see Carl's straw snorkel too! Self-filtering kinda, too.
Where we went on the first PBAS trip was in the northern top of Wharton State Forrest. This time we can get a look at the south.
Dean
Ps perhaps we need to start a new thread?
By Kent Westbrook on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 11:22 pm: Edit |
I don't think that narrow track even qualifies as a road! In fact, it was almost too narrow to even walk down, much less drive. Surprisingly enough, though, after a simple wash at the dealer, the scratches don't show that badly. A good rubbing/waxing will probably eliminate most.
For those of you who weren't there, the funniest parts of this scouting expedition were: 1) the look on everybody's face when the road Dean's wife picked out came to a sudden end in a swamp (continuing out of the swamp about a hundred yards away), 2) another Deb-selected trail coming to an end at a footbridge across a creek, and 3) this quote from Carl, spoken upon hearing some of the locals in the distance: "Rednecks with guns, oh boy."
Gets kind of spooky down there after dark but it was still fun.
Kent
By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 02:29 am: Edit |
Kent,
Debs is LOL! Really, I had chosen that route from the map, so its all my fault, she was just following my drawn-on directions. Anyway, its thanks to the Abo that we managed to see the swamp first rather than having to winch him out had he gone a bit further.
Surprisingly, the 1922 map doesn't show current beaver-dams!
'Twas a good day!

You can count me in. Let's by all means avoid the very narrow trails. My arms are tired from buffing out scratches from my last two excursions! I'm having new, bigger tires put on today, so I'll be dying to try them out.
Kyle
By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 03:48 am: Edit |
Kyle,
We tred not to do the narrow trail - but on a scouting mission you don't really know till its too late. Luckily, that scratcher was only a couple of miles long
So, did you get mudders? Which ones?
Dean
By Carl E. Cedeholm (Cederholm) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 04:18 am: Edit |
OK Dean,
Count me in, I'm starting to get use to sleeping on the couch anyway! (I think Lucy is still mad about what I've done to the new paint) He He!
Great! now Kyle has new tires too! RRRRRRRRRRRRR!! I shouldn't complain the slicks do just fine in the sand. But I still want tires! WHAAA!!
"rednecks with guns" I forgot about that.
Guy, welcome...we look forward to meeting you.

I bought the Dunlop Radial Rover RT in 265/75-16. They aren't as extreme as yours, but I've read very good things about them. Supposed to be excellent in snow also. I plan on leaving them on all of the time, so I didn't want too harsh of a ride.

Larry,
I had 255/65-16. Like a idiot, I didn't rotate them enough, so I got some bad wear. They've got some meat left on them, but not necessarily in the right places. I'm keeping the spare tire. It never touched the road. I figure it might be worth something, so I'm going to try and sell it.
