This is continuing from the Pine Barrens trip 2 thread.

Carl may not be able to make this trip. But I want a head count to see if anyone was still interested. If you can still make this sunday, please post up. With all the rain this week, it could be cool

Check back the previous pine barrens threads for full info. Its basically the same thing, just on a different date.

see Dean, I told you that you would not have to play in the mud alone...

If we get this rain it should be a good run. Don't forget to get a photo of Clarance's "all muddied up" rig....I want to see if he beats his old record.

Morning gentlemen,

Since Carl, Kent, Larry & Glenn can't make that day (2nd Dec) I am open to suggestions as to another day in the near future. PBAS members should let us all know when they can make it. Perhaps we could work with Glenn and his trip, so there is no date conflict there too.

The Dec 2 trip is still on. Details soon.

Let us know.

Dean

..are you out there? Is your trip on open or closed land? ...and do you know if it's official either way.

just wondering.

Ok here are the plans. It would be very useful if you could post up where you will be coming from, and which meeting place you will join us at.

Directions are NJ Turnpike South to exit 7 (route 206). Take 206 south for about 30 mins to route 70 circle. Meet up with some here maybe. Continue on 206 another 15 minutes to park entrance (quaker bridge road - a sand track).

Like last time, we can meet at the following places:

1. Easton Avenue, Stop&Shop parking lot, just west of New Brunswick. Its exit 10 off 287. 8.30am

2. Molly Pitcher Rest area (located between Interchanges 8A and 8) on the NJ Turnpike. 9am.

3. Circle at route 70 / route 206. 9.45 to 10am, depending on traffic.

Be aware that traffic is always bad.

If you have a CB then we'll be on channel 7. If you don't have one, buy one! (just giving you an excuse)

I'm leaving from the BX @ 8am. I'll meet you guy on the turnpike.
Carl, Dean may get all the mud to himself if i dont figure out a way (besides a snokel) to keep it out of the airbox.

OK, who am i kidding, I'll be diving i head (hood) first. I dont think i had enough mud on the roof last time:)

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Wednesday, November 28, 2001 - 11:18 am: Edit

Tentative list is as follows: So far we have:

Clarence R (Mud Man)
Brian Fransson
Jordan
Johnvigg
Me (with Steve M + 2 kids riding). You'll see the kids hanging on the back step for most of the time

Possibly Kyle B.
Possibly Kent W.
Possibly Carl C.

Please be aware that this is a completely flat area with sandy roads. Some of the roads may be VERY VERY narrow, so you WILL get scratches from the bushes. Most of them will come out with a wax and polish, but if you want to hear the real story email CarlC (are you still on the couch?)

There are no rocks, and no hill climbs (although there is a small hill we can have lunch by, but you're not allowed on the hill).

As for mud, well it would be really great an normal time, but because of the drout (sp?) I think there might not be any. This is what you get when there IS mud, though:

http://www.discoweb.org/barrens901d/DeepMudDean.rm

So its going to be a very gentle drive around a very scenic forrest. Plan on bringing lunch (I will personally be frying up a few steaks or hot dogs for my riders) so you could all do the same.

Kids will love the trip - especially if you let them ride on the back occasionally.

If anyone has a GPS, please bring it (in case mine packs up). We will be driving by the park office whcih sells contour maps of the area, if anyone wants to buy them ($4 each). You might need a few maps to cover our area. I draw GPS markings all over mine so I can tell quickly where we are when (not if) we get lost.

Some of the trail I have not done, so we might end up reversing out of tapering trails that get too narrow, or generally getting lost. The park closes at dusk, and its a fine if you're in there after dark (but generally, my experiences with the rangers so far has been that they are really cool. Prob won't run into anyone).

If anyone breaks down (unlikely) we'll have to fix you or tow you out - nobody stays there! BTW, does anyone have a winch?

Clarance,
Drive a little slower and you should be able to keep the water out of your air box.

sorry I'm gonna miss all those scratches!

Ok for this scratchathon, please tell us:

1. How many people.
2. What rover you have / color.
3. Where do you want to meet (Easton Ave Stop&Shop, Turnpike service area, route 206/70 junction, or Carranza Road / 206 junction. All of these are on the way.
4. If you have a CB or other talky thingy.
5. If you mind getting scratches!

Guys,

Just got back tonight (with no luggage) after 8 days out of town, part business, part vacation. Get home, find a message on the machine from my boss...I have to work this weekend (both days). So, I'm SOL (don't know how to do it but this is where I'd insert one of those crying smily faces).

Kent W.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Friday, November 30, 2001 - 10:22 am: Edit

Honestly, the FRS radio thing is a bit of a pain. Last trip my (magnificent) map reader Steve had a rather tedious job of repeating messages from CBs to FRS and then another thing. If you're planning to do a lot of offroading, a CB is the best bet. (Good job Dom) Try the Cobras in Best Buy or Radio Shack's glow-in-the-dark version for about $80-100 (40 channel). You'll be glad you got it in the long term!

To anyone who has not let us all know, please tell us which meeting point you'll join us, then we will know to wait for you if you're a little late. I'll be on (732) 610 9630 on the way down.

The gas prices down near route 70 are amazing. Regular was at 95 cents 2 weeks ago.

Plenty of time for lunch - so if you can cook something that would be great.

Dean

Ps I heard about "Hell Road" in that park, but I could never see it on my maps. Does anyone know where it is?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Friday, November 30, 2001 - 03:33 pm: Edit

I don't think so. This freekin storm that they keep saying is coming over just gets pushed back every day. What is it with the forcasting recently - it sucks big time every time! It never used to be that bad

depending on the direction you are coming from (206 south then on the right, 70 west then on the left) just before the circle there is a sand/dirt road and small field with some trees that we used last time (sure there are some parking lots around too ... but now where's the fun in that ). hope to see you there!

Wow, nice pictures, Axel. Looks like a good time and, judging from Dean's questions on another thread, sounds like he took on some water. What part of the Barrens was that, Dean? Looks like you and another guy had to be winched from that one big hole; was that Dom's new winch saving the day? I'll tell you, that shot of Dean static in the water brought back September memories.

Kent (who thought about all of you while working this afternoon)

Yeah, its the same freekin mud hole that we nearly got stuck in last time. Except seems some big mothers had been through since then, and made a bigger hole. Clarence was the only one to get through - well done sir!

It was pretty much the same idea as last time, but not so wet. One or two cool roads near the end were fun too - I even got to use the black rat winch (well, steve and clarence did) + a bit of camel trophy bridging, and all was well. I bet that road would be good after real rail! Axel has some footage I think.

Back again in the snow, alright?

Nice pictures boys!!! Hey Dean, was that the same mud hole that we did back in Sept? Looks like there's more water (I'm sure more mud) in it!

Did you stall or were you just plain stuck? I think I know what's next on your shopping list....lockers? Hey Dom, your truck is looking good since our last run... I guess you've been shopping.

I'm glad you guys had fun! Carl, are you off the couch yet?

Any more pics?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Dean Brown (Deanbrown3d) on Tuesday, December 04, 2001 - 09:56 am: Edit

Yeah I was stuck. Three fucking times I tried to get through. Had to be winched through in the end. THere was more water this time, well deeper anyway. Seems like some big stuff had gone through and made a hole. I didn't stall. And lockers I don't think would make much difference as all four wheels were spinning. Clarence did get through, but stalled just before getting out. His engine was rough for the rest of the day and lost power above about 40 mpg. To make things worse, he couldn't open the hood, as the latch had gotten stuck. So I think the snork is on his wish list now. I think Axel is going to post up the videos of our multiple attempts!

I don't think lockers would have made much of a difference in that particular hole. There isn't much traction in that deep, sticky Barrens whaleshit....

Hey fellas, what's happenin'? I volunteered to work (Verizon) downtown (Wall ST area), and the hours have been killin me. The OT is great, but the F*** train ride sucks. (At least i'll be able to afford that snorkel ;). I finally dropped the truck to LR, this morning. They said 11 fault codes that they have to look up. And i never did get the hood open. The check engine light has been an on going issue so they'll be picking up the tab. Thanks everyone for all help, GREATLY appreciated. So, when's the next trip?

Yeah, I saw you that day, running round the front of your truck with handkerchief in hand, after that spot of mud flicked up from the slicks

Not a problem anymore. I hooked up a high pressure pump to my front headlight washers and a mud sensor.
One spot of mud, and the washers blast it off in seconds!

I wouldn't want to splash mud around the mall.

Peterb - there will always be pine barrens trips. Anyone can organise them. Post them up here in a new thread, and you'll get a following

If there's snow, that might be cool. And clarence and I have a score to settle with a few of the trails there

Hey Dean, for the next trip, i say we call "Revenge On The Pine Barrens". What do you think?

Clarance
Did you get your snorkel yet?
Brian

Nay, i'll probably order it tommorrow along with a few other goodies. I decided to go with ARB. I like that rugged look too much. I'm using the difference for 12" Bilsteins 5100. Yes, i'm building a monster, lol.

clarance,

let me know if you need any help with the snorkel install .... or at least the proper tools (which will save you mucho time and money).

so lets see,

arb dom: 1
mantec dean: 0

I thought arb dom was wanna-be mantec dom

Clarence - bring a spare arb for the barrens - there's pretty narrow stuff there

mantec 2, arb 0

i can neither confirm nor deny those alligations.

as for the barrens, and because of the arb's bulky snorkel head design, i would recommend to rotate the head to face backwards before nature interjects and, not so kindly, does it for you. and as an added bonus, this should keep it from injesting an untold amount of foreign objects.

hey dean,

well, after posting i figured i'd play around a little with the air box. found lots of treasures in there; leaves, pine needles and some seriously discontented bugs.
also took some time to put silicone around all the connections and plug up the holes in the bottom of the air box (5 total). which leads me to a question, what did you do about these holes, leave them open or plug them up. arb directions do not specify.

thanks.

dominik

yeah, i know ... alligations ... injesting ... i'm helpless without spellcheck, not to mention when i'm still half

Dom, thanks, i'll definitely take you up on that. Looks like this gonna be a group project,

Carl-CDL
Dom-snorkel
Me-everything else

LOL.
Looks like my tea guzzler wont be ready 'till monday. Dean, i think they did use a can opener

Clarence - if you get the mantec theres a writeup in the tech section - very detailed. Maybe useful anyway, even with the home depot job.

Is yours a D1 or D2, and is it under warrantee still?

Dom - I didn't know there were holes in the box. Not sure whether to do something about it anyway.

So, who's planning the next run?

Dean

Wouldn't mind organizing the next trip but since I'm new don't know any trails. Don't know what's legal or illegal. Would be nice to set up a run next for weekend...Saturday or Sunday. Maybe I could do a scouting run in the Pine Barrens either tomorrow or during the week, if I can, to see if I can come up with something. Other than that???...anyone else have a suggestion or want to plan something.
Cheers
Brian

Hey I'd love to participate if you're willing to bring on someone new. My second disco is awaiting it's necessary off road gear but I'd be happy to attempt anything stock short of a 4 foot creek. I went to the Barrens a few months ago and I'm still paying the fines so I am definitely down with the LEGAL trails. Got busted near Batsto village. Send me an email if you get something going.

Dean, its a D2 at 59K, so x-nay on that warrantee. I saw that write up (nice). The ARB should be a little easier since you dont have to take off the fender(i think i'll remove it anyway just to clean it out). There are holes in the airbox, D1 and D2, They would only be problem in really deep water (airbox height). Check it after you go through some deep water.
Brian, If i get the truck back in time, count me in.
