My dealer wanted over $600 to do it. This tells you how to do it yourself step by step. http://www.d-90.com/~daveg/60kservice/report.html

About the only thing that is difficult about the service would involve the changing of the trans filter on the automatics. We often find that we have to use a port-a-power to spread the frame slightly to drop the cross member. This allows the trans pan to be lowered to replace the filter and gasket.

If you regularly service your Disco yourself (change oil, filters, brakes, rotate tires...), then you can do the 60k. Take a look at Dave G's page referenced above - piece o' cake, just need the time.

When you do the trans filter, get an extra set of parts to re-attach the exhaust y-pipe to the manifolds. You need:
- 2x exhaust gaskets
- 6x manifold studs
- 6x nuts for studs

Prep the exhaust nuts/studs with PB Blaster overnight. I did this and it came apart really smooth - didn't break a single stud!

You can probably use a rubber mallet to move the cross member (worked fine for me). Just remove the cross member bolts and beat it down/forward until it's just against the lowered y-pipe. This is the time consuming part, because if you've never done this before, you don't really know how *far* to move the cross member. I had to move it down/forward three time before I had moved it enough.

Everything goes back together real nice though.

You don't HAVE to change the tranny filter. Only at 30k. Tech bulliten said so a while back.

From Dave Gomes webpage (link above):
I heard from both an independent LR mechanic, and from an expert on ZF transmissions, that the LR recommendation of never changing the trans filter after 30k miles, was in short, BUNK. According to both these sources the filter should be changed EVERY 30,000 miles. And if this procedure is followed, the life of the trans can be easilly doubled into the 300,000 mile range.

BG I have seen and read the tech bulliten. It is not bunk. The reason I assume that they said this was to reduce maintaince costs. Yes it would be better to change but do you have to, no.

Ron,

I think that suggesting/agreeing with no filter change after 30k is a mistake, TSB or no TSB. Like you said, it is only an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs (but at what price?). I change trans fluid every 3rd engine oil change, and the trans filter WILL be changed every 30k.
