what would happen if I hacked this thing off? Id assume it would be louder, but will effect backpressure as well? does it serve a purpose? I figure if I hack it off there is less chance of me smashing it and cuasing some kind exhaust problem when im 100 miles from civilization. Any help would be appreciated.

I'd pull the damn thing off. Backpressure will prob. drop anyway as this is just another restriction in the system. I was going to do just this, but decided to have a local shop build me a custom high flow stainless exhaust system for $300.00 installed. Figured I wouldn't have to replace it again. Besides, it was cheaper than the overrated other brand........

I bent it when going up a very steep incline. It had a really bad approach angle so I attacked from the side, the turned hard right, then didn't get traction and I had to come down for another approach. When I came down, my rear bumper scraped hard and next thing you know, my resonator was pointing north! the pipe had wrapped itself around my rear axle housing. We used a rope and a tree to get it straightenned again and proceeded to cut a small piece of rope to use for securing the newly straightenned resonator. It was dangling low and was 90 degrees out of phase... sideways instead laying flat. This was not going to spoil my fun so I went up the hill again and turned into it sooner... a little scrape from the rear bumper and YEAH!!!!! Went right up... wiggling pipes and all!

Next morning a local muffler shop cut off the piece of bad pipe and replaced it. While I was there, I asked if the guy wouldn't mind getting it to tuck in more and be closer to my bumper... it worked! It is now sitting about 3/4 of an inch higher than it used to and was pulled inside a little. He used a torch to heat up the bracket that secures the resonator and bend it into place with gloves, a hammer and a pipe.

Lesson learned... "rigging" by means of brut force and eyeball measurements doesn't always spell catastrophy!
