Just got the clutch replaced on my 1997 Tdi Man, and now notice quite a "clunk" in the drivetrain whenever I change up a gear. It can be avoided by letting the clutch out very gently, but under normal driving conditions it is quite noticeable. It also occurs when I slacken off on the accelerater then re-apply (ie as the torque comes back on the driveshafts).

The car is new to me, so I wonder how normal this is. Can anyone please shed any light? If it is something that needs to be fixed, then I would be glad to hear what has to be done. Dealer prices have not been too exciting, thus far!

Cheers

I too have a clunk coming from the front diff area I think. I haven't had time to investigate yet. It may be normal......

My truck's drivetrain has a clunk, too, sometimes. Like Aussie said, it can be eliminated by smooth application of the throttle (well, in my case at least, since I have an automatic). It's most likely the universal joints or something tedious like that. I've never looked into replacing them, but I've heard it's a common problem with Discos.

Since I posted this message, I have had the mechanic from the LR workshop here take it for a run. He was very confident that it is "no worries" and basically due to the length of the drive train. Lots of joints etc and therefore cumulative effect of little bits of slack. A major change was made with the 97 model to resolve past problems with the drivetrain.
