1997 US Discovery SE

Yesterday as I went to top up my fuel tank the nozzle at the station kept shutting off after only a few gallons (I needed about 17-18 gallons).

You might think that the pump was the problem, but all I can say is that each time the pump shut off there was gasoline pouring out of the overflow port (as if the tank was full). I tried slowing down the flow and this did not help.

I managed to get about 5 gallons and went driving a few miles down the road to another station to try again. At the new station, things seemed to fill in the remaining 11.5 gallons without issue.

Anyone know the reason -- vapor buildup, etc. I had this happen about a year ago and the dealer corrected something because I had a faulty fuel guage. Not sure what they did to correct the early fueld shut off problem.

Those gas tanks can build up a ton of pressure especially when low. Mine does the same thing and it is really really annoying. I usually put the first 4 or so gallons in slow and then you can pump pump yourself away!

I have a 98 that does the same thing. If I get gas when the engine is cold I don't have a problem. If I drive around for an hour or two the pressure builds up so much that not only does the pump keep shutting off but, I have also had gas spill down the side of the truck quite a few times. I find that in the cases that I have to get gas when the truck has been running a while I put the gas nozzle halfway in and let it sit that way for a few minutes. Then I put the pump on the lowest setting. I haven't had any problems when I do it that way.

Try not putting it in all the way. I usually hang it about half out and find that it fills up on full blast w/out spilling.

Tom

Geeze, I would hate to be quoted out of context on that one...

I just bought a 1997 discovery and took it into the dealer for service and complained about this too. they said there is was a recall for the filler tube. it slides down after time and causes this problem. if you go to dealer they will pull up your vin in their system and see if it has had the recall fix yet and if not they will do it free of charge. only took 15 mins or so and it works perfect now.

Tom,
your funny...
Bryan, what if you just put it halfway in and wiggle it a little...becareful of the pre-drip before you put it in, or else you'll get it all over the side of your rear end..thats messy and annoying, and the smell you have to put up with especially after you've just washed it.....usually when she's all hot she doesn't like fast entry, so the end result is pushing out..take it slow and she'll respond....pump like you're asking permission the same time you are putting it in...

My 98 got recalled for the same thing with the gas tank cap/filler tube but, it didn't fix the problem. However, it doesn't happen as much now like it used to.

I've got a '97 and had the same problem. Bring it back to the dealer, they have a bulletin on this issue and it should only take about 20 minutes to fix.

Had mine corrected a year ago and have had no problems since then.

I have the same problem from time to time. Some pumps are a bit sensitive to the pressure.
Basicly, I do the same thing Tom suggests above.

Sounds kind of silly (or at least I look silly when I do it) but when I have that problem w/ my '94, I rock the truck back and forth to move the air around in the tank. After I hear the 'gurgling' I can usually fill the rest of the way.

I have a 2000 Disco and the fuel gauge will never go to F. It will only go to 3/4 tank. I've only had the vehicle a couple of months. I can't tell wether it fills all the way up though. Once the gas light comes on i always fill it up but it never requires more than 19 gallons. I can't tell wether it will just hold that much due to the problems mentioned here or that the gauge gives a false reading and it really has 5 gallons when the light comes on. Any comments would be appreciated.......

When you fill does it spill out at the end?

No - doesn't spill out.

Well keep pumping until it does, then you will know if it is actually full or you have a gauge/sender problem.
