Hey guys,
Newbie ?
When installing a new HD spring/shock combo (still undecided as to OME HD vs. Rovertym 2")
do I need to replace/add anything else, ie
steering damper, new shock mounts, or caster kit,
or can everything else remain stock? Thanks!

might be a good idea to upgrade the stock LR steering damner. If it's not shot already, it will be soon. I'd wait to see if you need it before paying for and installing castor kit.

From what I hear, Ranchos will require shock mounts (rear).

the two things have nothing to do with one another...

one can install extended shocks without altering the mounts...you can order 12" travel pro comp explorer ES 9000 with the standard LR fittings for 40$ each!....and then you DO need the cones!

LR are like individuals, you have to do it to the LR in question to see what you need...I have a 5" rear lift and did not have to modify anything much than the bushes...

see what you can afford, and multiply it by 3, coz that is what you will probably spend. plus, better drive shafts, links, bushes and ss brake lines will save you more money in the future if you will be keeping the LR for a long time!

i see what you are saying, but i was referring to Bluegills statement "From what I hear, Ranchos will require shock mounts (rear)." is not entirely true. Wesly can get new shocks without needing to get new mounts and cones.

I talked to John at Rovertym, and he said that Rancho doesn't make a shock for the stock upper shock mount, so you would have to replace the upper one for Ranchos. But there are several other shock brands out there. Don't get explorer pro comp shocks, they suck. My friend has them on his 2" lifted Chevy K1500 pick-up and he said they suck. They like broke in half or something.

This is a bad idea, unless you install taller bump stops the shock will act as the limiter of upward travel and will probably bite the big one, plus the stuffage will not be there. Get the upper mounts and do it right or there will be trouble.

I would say get just the springs and front shocks now. Keep the old rear shocks until you can afford a set of upper mounts and cones (or make some retainers).

Rancho makes an RS 9000 shock that will fit all the stock mounting points. However, they are not the long travel type, they are close to the stock size. These shocks will work fine with HD springs and no new mounts are required.
