Im thinking of getting the NATO 16x6.5 steel wheels. I just want to make sure that they are not to narrow for my 265/75's. Any thoughts?

Was just talkin to the tire shop and popped your question on them - 16x6.5 will "suck in" the 265 a bit, but it should work if tires have strong sidewalls. May get odd wear on inner/outer shoulders of tire. 16x7 or 16x8 is standard fitment recommendation. When you mount the 265 on the 16x6.5, you'll be able to tell if it's good or bad.

Mike Smith runs 35 x 12.50s on those rims so yes is the answer. Also a lot of D90 guys runs 285 75 R16 on that rim.

Wow - if they're runnin 12.5's or 285's, then you'd be FINE with only 265's. What's the advantage? Rim more isolated from the rocks, and therefore more protected (more rubber/less rim)?

In Mike Smith's case, Maine has a law which limits tires to whats covered by the flairs so rather than getting new flairs to accomidate wide offset wheels (like the GCR 15 x 8in) he just ran the 35 x 12.50s SSRs on the stock offset Nato wheels as he liked them better than the disco alloys (7in rather than 6.5in) which were his only other alternative. He must know what he is doing, he did win twist off.

what are stock LR alloys? I thought they were 16x7? are they 16x6.5? And, yeah, from the twist-off pix, it looks like Mike Smith has his shit together. I would have chosen a different paint scheme, though...maybe flames

LR alloys are 16 x7 as are disco steel wheels, 16 x 6.5 Nato wheels are the same offset as the alloys.

Should read Disco steel wheels not disco alloys. he had to run steel wheels to accomidate the larger Summers brothers 30spline rear hubs

gil, it might depend on what tire you plan to fit. Assuming it's BFG MT's, check out BFG's recommended rim widths for the MT.

Recommended is not all that will work. I know of at least 6 people with 285 75 R16 on these wheels on a D90 and 3 of them have BFG. I have also seen 12.50 bfgs on 6in rims without problems. You may get some tire "squirm" with something that excessive but with 265 you are more than ok.

Ron, you're right about people getting away with fitting oversize tires to various wheels. I know lots of people who do it without problems. I just wanted to let Gil know what BFG recommends for its tires, assuming Gil even wants BFG's. I just used BFG as an example because it's probably the most common tire.

and like my tire shop said, a good strong tire (like BFG) will be able to handle it. As always, problems are more likely to occur with the cheap shit.
