I recently took my 97 disco to the dealership b/c of a check engine light. They said it had a sticky valve and needed a $2,500 valve job (or what i like to call a ream your @ss job). I knew the discos had problems with engine deposits before i bought the vehicle, but didnt expect any probs at 55,000 miles. Ive never put anything less than premium gas in the truck, and it runs pretty well. I have noticed shaking a couple of times when trying to pass at 70 mph.(which is a sign of a sticky valve)My question is , some indepent rover dealers in my town say dealers are notorious for sayin u need a valve job when in fact, fuel additives like bg k44 can totally fix the problem. I tryed to order this product but it is only sold to garages. HAS ANYONE USED BG K44 OR ANY OTHER FUEL CLEANER, IS IT SAFE(GUYS AT BV LANDROVERS SAY ITS FINE), AND WHERE THE HELL CAN U BUY IT?

I have used 44k on my Rover. It was a night and day difference for my ride. Lot smoother and idle went from erratic to steady.
44k is a great product and they have another in between 44k intervals product as well.
You can find a local dealer on their homepage.

Michael
Go to your local auto parts dealer and get a can of Resilone engine oil additive. use this in place of one qt. of oil. This will clean all the carbon deposits from the valves and guides. I have a 96 and it did the same thing. I put this in and no more problem. Mine cleared up in about 100 miles. This is a problem because the valve guides are to tight and any carbon deposits will make the exhaust valves stick.
Good Luck
Nathan

You could try running synthetic oil from now on, but that depends on how much you wanna pay for oil. I've been using Mobil 1 for quite some time, and it has really cleaned-up my engine inside. Even stopped leaking and burning oil as much, and runs a lot smoother. But a 6-pack case of Mobil 1 is about $25.00, as compared to a 12-pack case of Havoline, which is closer to about $15.00.

I would agree with all above...
I got my 97 Disco with the check engine light on and the "misfire" code in memory...and bad shakes at 65-70 mph.
Same diagnosis - sticky valve #4 cylinder!
I switched to Mobil 1 and ran three bottles of Techron (two first, then one in the next tank) through the fuel system.
Within 150 miles ALL symptoms went away, my engine oil remains clean for a long time, and my Disco runs smooth, quiet and powerful at high speeds...and I spent less than $75!!
I figure if I keep with Mobil 1, and run Techron through the tank every 1,000 or so miles, I'll avoid the "sticky valve" nightmare!

Hey Micheal,
I am rover in North Georgia and I would like to know what you do with this valve problem. I have a 95 Disco with 85K miles and I haven't had a problem yet but I would like to be prepared. And I also deal with BV Landrovers alot and they are great guys. Are you in any clubs and do you run trails alot in NG.

Larry,
You have a 95 which has the 3.9L with a distributor. This engine doesn't seem to be prone to the valve sticking problem. Consider yourself lucky ( at least with this problem). This was one of the reasons I chose a 95 instead of a 96 (I was deciding between 2).

Hey Larry, Yeah the guys over at BV Rovers are very cool. They're the guys who told me about the sticky valve problems and told me about the BG 44k fuel additive. I still havent found any locally yet, but the guys at bv said they could help me out if i had no luck. I just got my disco recently so i havent been able to go on any trails as of yet. My brother has a Range Rover and is more familiar with all the local trails. If you know of any good trails in the mountains could you email me at [email protected].
Ill let you know how the sticky valve problem turns out.
