This past tuesday I installed 4.1 gears, front truetrac and rear detroit locker into my 98 disco. I used prebuilt 3rd members from GBR, along with their HD rear axles. Everything seemed OK until earlier this evening. As I was turning out of a driveway, I heard (and felt) a loud bang-type noise from the rear. Not like an axle breaking, but lower in tone. It drove ok on the way home. When I got home, I drained the oil - no metal chips or anything. looked good--refilled it. I jacked up one wheel on the rear axle, and was able to rotate the tire about 1/4 of a turn back and forth. After doing this a few times, the tire would continue to turn (with the other one on the ground) and a clicking noise would come from the diff. I lowered this tire and jacked up the other one - same story. Lifted both off the ground, and I was able to rotate either one without the opposite side turning, with the clicking noise coming from the diff. This is a rear with a detroit locker.
Did I strip a ring gear, break the locker, or what? Or is this type of behavior normal and I imagined the noise? TIA

Thanks for your reply, but I figured out that this is normal operation. (read the manual). Tried it out on the trails today, and I am very pleased...
