I am going to be putting a full set of new OME shocks on my '96 Disco. Thing just rides like crap with 54K on it. Just replaced the dampener last week and Nathan is sending me the shocks this week. My question is since the front shocks are 'coil over' what is the best way to remove them. Would compressing the springs be the easiest way? Looks like the axle is right below them though. How about taking them out from the top? Thanks for the advice!!!!!!

Undo the bottom nut and take off the four nuts holding on the top shock tower. Remove as one piece and then take the shock out of the tower.

Reinstall is the reverse but I recommend painting/rustproofing the towers while they are out. I have a couple with holes in them in my basement if you want me to show you what they look like if you don't.

I've been told by the guys at Rover Accessories that you don't need a spring compressor. I've also been told the easiest way to pull the front shocks is to remove the bottom nut, loosen the top nut, and to remove the shock tower (I think 4 bolts) and shock as one unit from the top/engine compartment This is also a good chance to check condition of shock tower while you are in there.

Looking at the vehicle, it makes sense, but I would appreciate it if someone could please correct me if I am wrong as that is the method I was planning to go with when we do springs and shocks later this summer.

Sounds easy enough. Good idea about painting the towers. I will certainly do that as I know they are most likely prone to rusting. Sounds like compressing is not the way to go nor necessary at all. Thanks again all~

If you are just doing shocks (and not springs) you do not even have to take off the front wheel or jack it up or anything.

That even makes it sound even easier. Should be an easy afternoon job. Don't really think I need to replace the springs. Should be the shocks that are making the truck ride poorly over bad pavement and just in general. The dampener made a little difference already in the wheel and hoping the shocks take care of the poor ride. No bouncing just poor ride quality.
Next step......new Rover R/T's.

The only thing I can think of is that you will need a relatively long socket extention or maybe two six inchers used together.
