I own a 1994 Discovery 5-speed and i am considering 265/75-16 tires on stock alloys( and i have a rovertym 2"). I heard 4:10 gearing is good for this tire size. Where is a good/cheap place to buy 4:10 gearing?

As far as "good" is concerned, GBR (http://greatbasinrovers.com) or ECR
(http://eastcoastrovers.com) are the only places I know of. I have heard good comments about both.
As far as cheap, well, it is about $800 for front and rear gears + install kits (100+) and labor (expect 300 or so per diff) if you don't do it yourself, which would be difficult for a novice. You be the judge on cheap.

on Great Basin Rovers web site it says that the 4:10 gears are $395 per set. What is a set? Do i really need new gears for 265/75-16? They say that having a 5-speed helps.

A set is per differential. So, you need two "sets" of the ring and pinion. Look around on the same page to see the install kit with shims and such.
