I was talking to my local (Richmond, VA) LR service manager and was informed that if I disconnect the battery, the SRS light will come on and will need to be reset at a cost of $72. Anyone else heard of this? Any way to reset it without going to the dealer?

Daivd, unfortunately unless you have a Land Rover computer, no. It is one of those things that HAS to be done by the dealer. Another bad thing is that your dealer is being a A-hole about it. LR Charlotte does many small things like that for free. If your ever down here (Charlotte, N.C.) then stop by there.

remove binacle...undo cover over instruments...cut and paste piece of black insulating tape over that bloody light...you'll never see it again...while you are at it you can pull the airbag, check engine and all those other completely useless tosserific "come to the dealer and be ripped off for nothing bulbs". My 94 hasn't shown me a bulb in years!!!

I was curious about this as well, mine is on. Sometimes it sort of blinks, not off and on, more like part of it gets dimmer then brighter. Most of the time it is on steady. I should talk to the dealer. Does anyone know what exactly this light is designed to do (aside from generate income). I would like to think that the airbags will still go off even if the light is on. If this condition is not indicative of something drastic, and will reoccur each time I disconnect the battery then I'll follow pjkbrit's idea.

That's how mines flashing too! If I disconnect the battery can I clean all the air bag harness contacts without worrying the thing will inflate?

I've disconected the battery multiple times and the SRS light has never come on? BTY I believe that the airbag could still deploy even though the battery is disconnected. This is one area I'm not messing with. When that thing goes off it does so with a vengence.

Ditto with Wisker,

Disconnected battery many times, no SRS, but if you disconnect any part of the SRS, then the SRS light will came on and require reset to operate. Cleaning the connection is like cleaning the trigger of a loaded gun... that air bag goes off with your face in the wrong place would do damage.

So what's a binacle, and how do you remove it? I've got some foggy goo on the inside of the instrument panet lens, and would love to get in there and clean it out. . . .

Binacle is the hooded assembly over your instrument panel. Remove the two screws at the base of the panel just above the steering column, then the rest is pretty straight forward - removing the exposed screws on each side of the panel.

I've disconnected my battery from my 97 disco and I didn't have to get anything reset (SRS lights , etc).

Talk to Ron over at LR Richmond. He's been very helpful to me whenever I've had questions.

Also, a friend of mine who has a defender and a range rover says a guy named Drew over @ LR Richmond is a great tech guy too.

Yeah, I am not sure about the battery disconnect thing, mine came on after drive 30 mph across a field covered in 18" of snow. I think I froze the sensors to death. I still think it was worth it, I had snow flying out from the sides of my truck about 12 feet in the air, very cool looking, my wife is right, I am a kid.

I have the same issue where the SRS light fades on and off occasionally and found something interesting! My dash cover is not held tight by the two screws which hold it in place towards the bottom of the dash display. When I turn or stop short and the dash cover moves it actually fades the light on and off! By tightening the two screws and gets the cover on tight, the light stays off. Strange but you may want to check this out!

Forget tape...

Just pull the tach out and remove the two light bulbs for the SRS indicator. I just did mine.

'94 Disco..my SRS light came on some time ago. Local dealer reset it for free..and computer said codes showed low resistors in the harness. But my battery had been low just before it came on..replaced with a new one. Dealer said the newer harnesses don't have resistors. But it's likely that when batt voltage is low, the resistors appear bad to the computer, since their voltage drop will not be spec. So, I believe if you have the resistor harness, the light may be triggered with LOW VOLTAGE situations..not NO voltage. With a totally disconnected batt, the computer probably can't even check the resistors. But maybe sometimes disconnecting/connecting the battery might make sporadic connections that would trigger it as the voltage fluctuates. This could explain the different experiences posted here. So...change that battery before it gets too low!

We need some ee tech to figure out a computer connection..you can get computer hookups for GM stuff like older Suburbans, that'll communicate with a laptop, for a couple hundred bucks. I'm sure it's possible with Discos...just not enough demand I guess.

the srs light only comes on when battery is very low or disconnected with key on or something wrong with the system.wait 20 to 30 min.before you disconnect battery.
