I use 10w 30;have a 94 Disco with 219K on it, and that works just fine. I am 3rd owner and all owners have used same weight, no oil usage and still a good tight engine at high mileage

Ok Jake - what's your secret? What maintenance do you recommend to get the high number of miles. I expect to get as many out of my Disco but want to know how to with minimum amount of major uneeded repairs. Thanks.

if I am going to change oil weight, should I be doing something special on the next oil change, other then draining the oil completely?

I think that the secret, other than good "mechanical genes", ie an engine that is screwed together well is maintenance. Oil is cheaper than bearings and rings, so treat it like voting in Chicago, early and often. I change a 3K intervals, nothing special, just a good quality brand name oil. This truck has not had additives in added to the crankcase, so I can't comment on that or synthetic. If you do a lot of offroading, low speed (traffic snarls) rough driving, decrease the time spent between changes. Also, change filters regularly, air and oil. Contaminants get into the engine throught the air filter, as well as the normal breakdown of the metal parts in the engine. Filters are cheap, so change when you do the oil. Other than that, watch the temp, change coolant & rubber hoses & belts when old and cross your fingers. This truck has had its share of mechanical difficulties, but if you keep the fluids serviced well, you can expect a longer life span.

I have been told that Mobil 1 15W50 is a good choice for all-round (between 20 deg F and 95 deg F temps) for stop-and-go driving (Northern Virginia traffic).

That is what I am currently using in my 97 Disco.

RE /oil weight dont suppose this helps you guys in north america but for my 234000 mile 93 200tdi we always use semi synthetic 10w40 in scotland.this not only reduces noise drag and turbo cooking but also helps miles per gallon. this is critical at 82.9 pence a litre[a dollar twenty ]

I'm running Amsoil 0w-30. Its rather costly but your mileage increase will pay for it in the long run if you extend your drain intervals. Most everyone agrees that a high quality synthetic oil can handle the extended drains but that you should still change your oil to drain the contaminates that the filters don't catch. A solution to this is to use a bypass filter system. Amsoil markets a bypass filter that filters down to 1 micron ( the best full flow filter is somewhere between 20-40 microns). Most engine wear is caused by particles in the 5 to 40 micron range. This bypass filter also adds a little over a quart to the total cap.
I signed up as a dealer to save on the cost which was $198 for my 98 discovery - this included the bypass filter kit and oil. Amsoil said this setup is good for 12 months or 36k.
I will provide Amsoil products to members of this board for cost if anyone is interested.

Travis - where did you install by-pass filter. I was looking at these also. Did you do it in-line with the oil cooler lines? Seemed like a good deal to become a "dealer" - only a few bucks.

Hey; this Amsoil, is it marketed by Amway?

Bill - Yes I installed it in-line with the oil cooler and it worked out great. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Tony - thats what I thought years ago, but no - its not marketed by Amway. Amsil has been in the synthetic business since before Mobil 1

Hey Bill,
I was wanting to do this Bypass upgrade and I would like the information about what you did and how you did it and as well to purchase the products from you. Please let me know I have a trip to Colorado in July and I want to get this done as soon as possible.

Thanks,
Larry
