I have a 95 Disco and it will not start. This is what its doing: just turns over and tries to start, kind of sputters, but never starts. It ran find the day before. This is what I have checked: getting gas, has spark from coil (orange/yellow), pulled out spark plug, and smells like gas. Now for the strange thing, checked the compression on three cylinders on the passenger side of the engine and they read about 140-150, now on the drivers side, the compression on two (middle) cylinders, won’t even reach 40. Anyone have any ideas. Have not checked timing.

check head gasket. is oil whiteish, have you let engine overheat?is coolant dirty?or oily? radiators can choke at fairly low miles.always use correct antifreeze/coolant mix.this applies to diesel and petrol engines

I would put money on the cause being a blown head gasket. The typical symptoms of a head gasket failure will not be present in this case. Most often a head gasket will fail between the cylinder and the coolant chamber that in in the block. This type of failure will cause the white smoke that is typical and will cause a "hard spot" in the cycle that makes it difficult to turn the car over. This is caused by the down stroke sucking water into the cylinder. You blew the gasket between two cylinders, Thus the compression stroke of one cylinder is absorbed by forcing the fuel into the downstroke of the adjacent cylinder.

Have you considered a TDi upgrade?

My '95 did the same thing around christmas for no apparent reason. Because of the gas smell I believed it to be flooded. I turned off the truck and propped the gas pedal down to let anything in the throttle body evaporate. After about 15 minutes I came out and cranked it with the pedal to the floor. It finnally caught and ran like crap for a while then smoothed out. What actually happend? I have no idea, but it hasn't done it since. Oh well. I still don't ask to many questions when dealing with rovers. What have you got to lose?

This happened once to my '95 also, and it turned out to be a bad spark plug wire, and a cracked distributor. Bought the tune up kit from Rovers North, new wires, plugs & distributor. Shazaam.

Well I hope its not the head gasket. It's going in the shop next tuesday. the oil looked fine and I just added anti freez last friday. What is strange is one day it ran like a champ and the next day won't start. Strange. Well I thank you all for your help and if you can think of anything else please let me know. lrdisco@swbell.net

Adding antifreeze can show up any leaks as it has a searching ability.Always run with correct a/f mix,if you lose water find leak fast!
