I own a 1995 Disco and I do a lot of wheelin' on rocks and hard stuff. I don't have that much body armoring now(just an AB front skid plate), but I plan to get some. I am looking for something to protect the transmission, fuel tank, doors, frame and differentials. Any recommendations? I want something that is up to taking a good beating. I really don't feel like spending a lot of $$$ either.

You should investigate having something custom made fot the trans/transfer case , what I see out there now hangs too low

I am now considering custom building some skid plates. What kind of steel/aluminum should I use, and how thick? Should I weld or drill?

How thick you make it depends greatly on its design. If you are asking if you should weld or drill the frame to mount it. The answer is niether. You should make it so that it uses existing holes to attach to the frame.
