I am somewhat confused as to the "Correct" way to change the oil in a Disco V8. Now on LR Forum, there is a guy saying that you run the engine, turn it off, drain the oil from the pan (no problem so far) THEN, fill the engine up with new oil, THEN take off the old filter, fill it with new oil then screw it on.

Now having changed oil in engines of varying makes for years, this seems overly complicated, or at least too involved.

Provided that the sump and/or filter is not left off for a long period of time, say 30 minutes, and "prime" is lost, surely the procedure should be drain oil, remove filter, replace filter, replace plug, fill with new oil start up and check for leaks?

To complicate it a bit more, another website www.landroverclub.net advocates the simple procedure above, but adds that to avoid getting hot oil dripping down your arm, punch a hole in the filter before it is taken off and drain it.

Why complicate a simple oil/filter procedure?

I drain the oil, change the filter, then fill it up. Done it many, many, many times with no problems. Tk&nc oil filter with Mobil 1 15-50.

The only 'trick' I do is to add a little oil to the filter to saturate the filter element. But that's hardly rover specific.

Like you said, if you don't let it sit for a long time, your not going to lose your prime.

It does work to do it the nomal, ie non-LR way BUT if that sucker loses prime even once you will be sorry. Play it safe and do it the manual specified way.

I agree with Dave...prime the new filter and you won't have a problem.

are you talking about the oil pump loosing prime? if so is it not a rotary gear style pump? if it is then it is a positive displacement pump, and it is partially submerged, and should not need to be primed like a non-positive displacement pump. now I am really confused. putting oil in the filter prevents oil starvation on the downside of the filter at initial start up. or am I completely wrong. pls help!!!!!!! mike

2000 DII - The manual states :

1. Drain oil.
2. Refill
3. Pull Filter off
4. Replace filter.

I did this and had no problems. It is messy when you pull that filter off so beware......Whether you want to change the washer is another matter - i do.

2. Remove filter, replace filter filled with new oil
3. Fill engine with new oil.
