I have read through the Discoweb history looking for information on headers for a '97 disco I, and I cannot find much information. I have just identified a crack in my drivers side exhaust manifold and my '97 is out of warranty. This makes the second manifold to crack (passenger side cracked while under warranty). I figure it is time to look for an alternative, but I have to remain 'US emissions legal' (not for California). Has anyone installed headers and still utilized catalytic converters ? I have not been able to find much information on the web, any help would be appreciated.

Have the crack welded. Cheap and it will last a good long while.

Here's a thought . . .
The 3.9 is based off an old buick block if I remember right. Did the exhaust port location change when rover started producing it? How about the stud location. Finding headers for a buick (at least in the states) should prove easier than locating rover headers. Compared to most there's actually quite a bit of room down there so I'm thinking standard "shorty's" should fit. Someone posted the entire history of this motor before. Hopefully they will respond to this.

I am not sure what new stock manifolds cost, but I doubt you could find quality headers cheaper. Plus, the stock manifolds are pretty well designed...your not going to gain anything with the headers.
Have you checked with any used parts suppliers? You could probably scare up a set of exhaust manifolds pretty cheap.

My dealer quoted me a price of about $180US for right exhaust manifold for my 97 Disco. I've seen the price range of $60 to $100 on this site.
I'm going to get mine welded. It can be done without removing the manifold

I Have Disco II front springs brand new. $50.00, A pair of 3.9 Heads in good condition $200.00. Range Rover Classic rear 1/4 Glass $30.00. L/R exhaust Manifolds $50.00each. 2 D-90 A-frame brush bars $60.00each.

Well the one on the rangie was welded at least a year ago (guy I bought it from had it that long and said it must have been that way when he got it) and it does not leak now. It was a big crack too. That is the most I can say other than make sure you get someone who really knows what they are doing as it is supposedly tricky to make work.

Thanks for all the information. I may see about getting my manifold welded, though I will have to remove it, as the crack is on the back side.
I did contact, RPi, Rimmer Brothers, and NRP to see if they offer a set of headers that are compatible with the emissions components. RPi has responded, with a no. I'll update once I hear back from Rimmer Brothers and NRP.
The information link above on the Rover V8 looks very interesting.....but I still have not been able to find the exact link John C. was pointing too.
I know I can simply replace with a factory part, but that does not always seem to produce the best result available. Now that I have had both left and right manifolds crack within 55,000 miles, I'll be replacing them a few time in the next several years. I had hoped to find a better solution. Thanks again, John

While your down there check the engine mounts. Just a hunch.

Well, still no better alternative than the stock exhaust manifold for NAS emissions legal vehicles. I am still very interested in anyone with a solution (i.e. headers, tubular manifold, etc). So let me know.
Ron - thanks for the hint about the engine mount, I certainly will take a good look at them.
