Factory auxilliary light hookups?

I have a 1999 Discovery series 1 that has an extra power and ground wire(blue and black) attached to an open plug in my headlight areas, will these power my hella 500s? I can't seem to find a way to get power to them either. If you have these please respond, I am just trying to save the work of wiring the lights if I don't have to, Thanks a lot, Bo

do you have the factory fog light switch? if not, you will have to get one. also, the headlights have to be on to get power to the connectors.

i just wired my roof lights. Use seperate fuses and relays. Then the headlights dont have to be on or anything like that. You can use them freely. Dealers (in CT) will only wire lights connected to the high beams. I put toggle switches where the heated seat buttons would go. heres how they look.

Blue Gill- i had factory fogs in, but pulled the lower airdam and had placed Hella XL's in the genuine brush bar. i just tapped into the factory lines and that was it. no extra relays or anything. keep in mind, if you use higher wattage bulbs, you should use heavier wiring.

Start by purchasing a factory switch ($8/$14US)for the fog/driving light location on the dash. This switch should/will be located next to the cruise control switch. To find the factory connector buried in the dash you will need to remove the bank of switches by pulling them out, then disconnect it/them. Open the cup holder and removed the screw that attach it. The clock need to be removed next (pita). This will give you some room to look for the needed switch connector (green in color), it should be taped to the wiring harness routed in that area. It's very tight so you may need to open the panel under the steering wheel (knee location) for better access. Once the connector is found, route it thru the dash opening and reverse the installation. A quick check to be sure that a needed relay is in place is to switch on lights ,low beam, depress new switch to "on" position and the switch green indicator light should be on, if high beams are on, the switch indicator will be off. Now you should be ready to connect the "Hella's", I'm not aware of a mating connector (off the shelf) for the ones on the front of your Disco, so I suggest removing them by cutting the connector wires leaving about two or three inches of the wire attached to the connector, this will let use re-install at a later date if the aux. lights are removed. Use "Posi-lock" connectors to make for a clean, positive install of the aux. lights. I hope this helps.

Yeah, it does help - thanks Doug - I've messed around back behind the switches and clock, definitely a PITA job.

Danno - are the stock LR fogs 55W? I'm looking at Hella 550's (rectangular 55W).

One more thing, how can I work in a third Hella 500 along with my existing two Hella 500's? I'm assuming I need an additional relay for the solo lamp...

stock is 55w. what you could do is wire a relay to one of the other lights positive leads and have the 3rd wired to come on when the other 2 are on. there should be instructions with the lights on how to do this. this way you do not have to add another light for the 3rd one.

Pin 87 will be the positive lead to the 3rd light.
Pin 86 will connect to the positive lead to one of the 2 lights.
Pin 85 to ground.
Pin 30 to the battery.

Great explanation! I have one question, are telling me that the harness and relay are already there for the aux. lights on a '97 SD and I didn't have to run new wires. It sure would have been easier. I have second question, how are you guys inserting your pictures with the text? I want to do a post inserting a diagram, and I can't get it to work, it's a .tiff file.

Look down in the space around your headlights - the wire harnesses are probably there. You just need to install a switch and hook lights to existing wires. You have to be sure that you're connecting apples to apples, though - existing wires/harness/relays can only handle a specific load - you can't just splice any auxiliary light into the system.

As far as attaching pictures goes, must be GIF or JPEG file - see "Formatting" under "Documentation" over on the left side of screen.

It should be taped to the wire harness in that area, it won't be obvious due to the fact that it's covered (part of it) with black electrical tape. Looking into the clock opening the connector is located up and to the left (if you have children i.e. 9/12 years old, their hands can fit into the opening). If you have the correct driver, remove the foam block beneath the steering wheel for better access. It's there. Also, you will need a relay, any parts store that sells aux. lights will have them. To install this relay, remove the driver side kick panel ( two fasteners) and there should be a bank of three relays and an open slot toward the front of the truck. Place relay in open slot. If you're not sure about the relay you may need to purchase, drive to the parts store and pull the first relay in the bank, take it in and compare the schematics on the relays. It is a four prong relay and should cost less than five dollars. Hope this helps.
