I was looking in the tech section here and I was interested about the K&N cone filter replacement. I was thinking either that, or a simple K&N stock filter replacement. What are the advantages of going to the cone or staying with the stock airbox. Thanks in advance for your help.

lots of talk. i had one on my VW Jetta VR6 and it actually sucked in more warm air which does not improve performance, engines like cooler air and there has been plenty of testing on this point. in cars, people build heat shields around the cone which is basically building a new airbox. also if you wheel in wet places, you run the risk of getting water in the engine (really BAD) some say the cone adds some power, but on a disco who can really tell. best thing to do, IMO, is to get a K&N drop-in filter.

This really depends where you are located. The cone filter is not ideally suited to deep water wading. If you don't cross deep streams, then that would not be a consideration for you.

The K&N replacement filter works well and a lot of people swear by it. I used to have K&N air filters on my motorcycle and it made a huge difference.

What year is your Disco? Pre-GEMS systems (pre 96?) will benefit much more from a K&N than a Disco with the GEMS system. GEMS controls the amount of air coming in, so a better filter will not result in much improvement (those darn air flow sensors at work!).

Personally, I have a stock filter and a K&N and I routinely switch back and forth and I do not notice any difference.

Lol,
