I noticed today there are what appear to be dry rusty stains on the rubber window seal of the back two side windows that hold my radio antenna. The stains are on the top of the inside of the window seal. I took a close look and there didn't seem to be any metal carosion going on but I didn't remove the head liner to inspect throughly. The top of the window aligns pretty close to the roof line and it surprised me to see this stain on otherwise black rubber elsewhere. Anyone noticed this

Damn! it's amazing, the same thing happened in my 97. I hope this is not something major I have to worry about, I'm already stressed about the 60K service.

Mine came new that way when I first got the truck - I still don't know what the stuff is and I design/manufacture automotive seals for a living (go figure) - I just used "Goof-Off" and it wiped right off and hasn't re-apppeared. (BTW - don't leave any solvent on the rubber seals after you're done - if left on it will destroy them)

My '96 has it too. I just thought I was getting some rain in from my alpines and it was leaking down and rusting from something. I do have a little leakage on the right rear on my truck......the seals back there are known to leak and crack from the outside. LR has new ones to help this, but the rust color stuff is a seperate issue I am sure. Doesn't bother me.......just as long as there is nothing wrong.

whew - all of this is reassuring. Doesn't seem to be anything much to worry about. I pulled the outside gasket aside slightly and inspected in there as well as I could and saw no discoloration or suspecious bubbles, so I guess it's just a minor fluxuation in the space-time continuem, although I did recieve a nice note from a chap who did have rust and used fish oil to kill the red stuff - wonder what his truck smells like.

I have the same residue on inside seals - looks like dust accumulation and/or weathering of the rubber (UV rays, solar flares, space-time continuum flux, and all that).
New outside rear gaskets from dealer are around $200 What a rip. I've shopped around town for new gaskets, but everyone just calls the dealer for the parts when they get off the phone with me Any cheap solutions would be much appreciated - I can't, in good conscience, give the dealer $200 for rubber.

In the meantime I have just used a black silicone on the exterior of the window seals to fill in the gaps in the cracking and splits. They have split just as expected and this at least helps a little to keep some water out hopefully.

I've smeared fish oil inside and out and I LOVE it! Smells just like the back of my old truck in high school
Those English chaps have some odd remedies, don't they?

Keep a can of that FDS in the back in case you get a little woosey from the stench.
