ARB make a neat adaptor for Hi-Lift jacks which is made to attach to your bumper bar. I asked the ARB dealer how a Disco would go with one and he had no idea. LR don't recommend it either. Mine has a standard rear bumper and a factory bullbar up front which both seem to have pretty good mounts. Has anyone ripped off their bumpers etc with a Hi-Lift or are the abovementioned playing safe? I also like the idea of the Hi-Lift as an emergency winch any experience with this would also be appreciated

If you mean one of those chain & hook deals for the Hi-Lift, they will bend both front and rear stock bumpers (seen it done) - A good spot in the rear is through a D shackle in the receiver hitch - but then you also have to be careful because you're lifting the entire rear at once on a very unstable small jack base. In the front you're more screwed because there is very little there that the weight of the truck won't bend.
As a winch - they work - slow and tedious, but if it's all you've got - it'll get you unstuck. I used mine quite a bit for that before getting a winch. You'll want to carry chain if you plan on winching with it because tow straps stretch too much and you you lose travel in the Hi-Lift before moving the truck.
