I've been trying to figure out how it cost $10K for a diesel conversion. I would like to know what kind of opinions people have on this topic. My 4.2 RRClassic LWB is turning past 140,000 miles and I am starting to think about the future. Funny how that least complicated 300tdi costs more than the 4.6 with all the electronic BS.

so...you want to buy a $10,000+ engine. Isn't that engine worth more than your RR? Why don't you just buy a newer Land Rover?

Because I don't have $10K+ to spend, and I would do all of the work myself to make it economically feasable. Otherwise I would just rebuild the 4.2 which is the cheapest option. Oh yeah, I have 6K to spend not 50K for a disco, not 40K for D-90, not 4K for Series + time and money.

So what makes the diesel so expensive?

Before looking at the diesel, make sure that you realize the differences in performance of the diesel vs. gas engine. If you do alot of low speed rockcrawling, the diesel is for you - the torque at low rpm is great for going over obstacles at low speed. However, if you live in the midwest, where you see a ton of mud, I'd stick with the gas engine. It will get the tires spinning faster to get you out of the hole.
Just my two cents.
