I started up the 95 Disco and the check engine light stayed on. It has 75,900 miles. Car drove ok on the way to work. Only thing I have done to the truck recently was an oil change and differential fluid change last weekend. However, no leaks at all.
What do I need to look for? Temperature was fine. Any suggestions?

They only real way to go is to have the codes that set the light retrieved. They will describe the paremeter that is out of spec. Bite the bullet and go to a reputable mechanic even if only to have him tell you what the code is.

I thought the 95's still had the code readout under the seat like the 94's. No?

Have you had your Emissions Check done yet at 75K miles. If not its probably the Emissions check.
Mine went on at 75,300.
Look under the front passenger seat. there is a black or green box about the half the size of an cigarette box, it has an access hole under the sticker, peel off the sticker and insert a thin wooden stick in to push the switch.
That will reset the Check Engine light.

Is the resetting procedure for the Check engine light the same for a 98 Disco? I don't feel like paying 50 bucks for a loose gas cap. If the procedure has changed what is the new one or is the tool book required in all cases? Thanks in advance for any help.
Steve

The box is RED, and you reset it by shorting the two pins under the LR sticker.
Sorry about the wrong color and method to clear, its been a while since I reset mine.

The Check Engine light is yellow, and can't be reset by doing this. The procedure you describe is for resetting the red "Service Engine" reminder light. The "Check Engine" light is caused by something else, most likely an O2 sensor, or maybe the MAF. That's what it has been every time mine has come on.

Look under your seat for the OBDII box, what is the error code? what number 48? 44? 45?etc.

its a 48 code.

I just had this problem, code 48 is a idle speed problem, I had chase all the Fu*king electronic, change all the sensor, and stepper motor, it fixed (other problems). But code 48 was still there. It turns out my base idle is too high. At the throttle, there is a cap covering a allen screw to adjust the idle, turn it clockwise (a little) to decrease the idle rpm. Decrease it too much will make your idle rough or stall. Do it a little at a time, the goal is to have a high of idle (near 735rpm) as possible without triggering this check engine light. Once you decrease the rpm some, you need to shut of the truck, and disconnect the battery (negative terminal) for 5 seconds or so to clear the check engine. Start the truck code 02 will come on (meaning battery was disconnected, shut the truck off, then start it again. Now the 02 will clear by itself, and see if the same code (48) come back (usually with 30 second after the restart) then the rpm is still too high. Mine rpm is right at the 2nd line (the line below the 1000rpm line). Another cause of 48 could be stepper motor going bad. I posted a aftermarket alternative to this stepper motor do a keyword search

When you set the base idle be sure to block off the air line that goes to the stepper motor. Otherwise you will not be able to get it set properly.

a little piece of electrical tape takes care of that damn light every time

Guys,
I have a 96 disco, CLOTH SEATS (not power). I don't see any boxes - just cords with multi-pronged plugs. I have a Check engine light on -- I know its b/c of likely O2 sensors, Anyone know where my "button box" is - its color, etc.?
Thanks guys.

open the right rear door and look under the front passenger seat. It should be displayed upside down so u can read it.

We had just purchased a used 97 discovery and the check engine light came on. I have no box that I can see under the passenger seat.... any help? Is there a way to connect a voltmeter to the computer cable to read the codes similar to the GM emission systems?
Thanks

JA-
Did you find it? I have a 96' too , and I know my o2 sensors need replacing (previous owner had the dealer diagnose this).
For the life of me I can't find this box under the seat!!!!
ok - I found a 2 wire (black and purple) plug, and another plug with yellow tape on it with 13 terminals(is this for the CD player or what?) under the passenger seat.
help...
(boy I hope that shop manual I ordered gets here soon!)

The LED display box is only on 1995 and before. By the way, problem solved. NO MORE LIGHT!!!

Jorge,
What is the final verdict?

It was just a glitch in the system. I reset the check engine light by pulling the fuel injector fuse under the bonnet, turning the ignition to #2, then off, putting fuses back in, then starting it back up. The light went out and it has not come back.
God I love my truck!!! The dealer would have charged me at least $100, plus tried to sell me everything.

Yeah, the '96 and newer Discos featured OBDII, and no diagnostic display was included under the front passenger seat. I don't think there's many scanners out that'll read OBDII, especially for a Land Rover. But maybe.
