I realise that it is better to put light/bulky items on a rack and leave heavy things low in the vehicle.... but was wondering if anyone had tested (or learned the hard way) how much weight on top makes a significant difference in angle safety. Could it be 35kg=77lbs or 75kg=165lbs or what?
Thanks for any help.

I run mine quite often with 2-300 pounds up there. I have run poison spider messa/golden spike/gold bar rim in Moab with closer to 400 on the rack and didnt have a roll over. You will get a tire in the air a bit more and you definately know the wieght is there. The inside of the truck is loaded pretty heavy as well so that offsets it a bit.

I had a modified Bearmach. Most of the racks will hold that much. They just keep the rating way down so some bone head doesnt load it with that much wieght and try to drive it like a ferarri.
There are some pics in the trails section and a video of me crossing the golden crack with that much wieght up there. Look at the Moab 2000 and 2001 pics.

Thanks for this.... it makes sense. I am off on a trip to outback Aust in about 5 weeks and need to carry more than 70-100lbs up there. Some recent talk on an Aussie Disco list has been worrying ... but not direct experience, just theory.

You see how I carry the bags on the roof? Spread your load out to each side evenly. It works out better that way. Dont just bunch it all up in the center.

If you're looking to put allot of weight on the roof rack, I would get a Hannibel rack from Rover Accesssories. Charles said that the Hannibel is so strong it can support the weight of a Rover on TOP of the rack without braking. That's real impressive.

Guys,

Just watch the roof rack load over time / rought roads. It cracks the B pillars. RRs are prone to this to.

The area to look for is just near the waist line. Open the doors and have a look around where the paint goes from black to body colour. I didn't notice mine, it was picked up by the service guys on a pre-expedition check over.

Its easy enough for a panel beater to repair - but do it before a long trip.

yeah, that's the Hannibel. It sort of does look like those plumber racks. Just put some pipes on the roof and and a vice on your receiver hitch and your there.

Seems like someone just rolled a Disco in Moab and had some wieght on the rack. Anyone hear anything?? All I am getting is that it was a failed hill climb or something.
