Last night I noticed a burning of wires or shorting out sound intermittently coming out from under the hood; it definitely seems to be coming from the drivers side. Only seems to happen when moving. I would sure like to be that NAPA guy that can crawl under and around car while it is moving ! I have looked (when stopped) and can see nothing visible or smell anything burning but it sure sounds like it wants to go up in smoke (to my wife). I have not noticed any loss of power or anything "not working" so I dont know if it is an electrical problem or not. Anyone else had this problem ? I was not running AC as it was in the 40's here. Thanks in advance.

Sounds serious - do you mean that you hear some sort of "arcing" sound (like electricity jumping around). Any fuses blown? If everything is properly grounded and fused, then any zzzzt short sound should be a one-time sound (fuse will blow and you'll know it when something stops working). A constant sound like that would scare the hell out of me...

Yea it is kind of scaring the lady a bit and has spooked me as well. It is not a constant sound but very intermittent and only at speed. I was driving at night when I noticed it and nothing was obviously wrong w/ the electrics. Sounds exactly like touching two wires together and getting a spark. I sprayed some lubricant on the boot of my steering column (against firewall) couple days ago to rid myself of squeaky wheel; perhaps that has something to do with it ? No burning smell, no obvious melting under the hood.
Any input appreciated.

Simple 1.check: Check all wires before doing any more driving. Pull all wiring you can see anywhere and everywhere to check no clamps are loose. The main wires run through firewall behind fuelfilter on a 200tdi... (i.e. passenger side).

A wire slipped from its clamp on my Disco, giving a total blackout everywhere (except on battery itself...).
