Question: What does the movie Deliverance and my Disco have in common?
Seriously I have a Squeal associated around my serpentine belt somewhere. I changed the belt but it really not as loud as a belt slipping. It got more frequent after the belt change. I am thinking that it might be a ball bearing assoc. w/ the belt? ("it's all ball bearings these days)
Anyone have any ideas or how to diagnose?
Thanks,
96' Disco

Could be the fetzer valve???

Ok seriously.....well I have gone through quite an experience with something related to this. Are you having any issues with the truck charging properly at all? If so make sure that the belt is routed corrected. It is pretty easy to screw this up and it can be routed other ways and still fit. This is what happened to me on my '96. Squealed sometimes (not like a pig). Does your tach always function? If so then most likely it is not this. If you think it could be a bearing there are sealed bearings in the pully for the alt. From when I have heard them they don't really squeal too much. Not too high pitched. Is your belt a genuine LR? Make sure it is......they will squeal with aftermarket belts sometimes.

Take a long screwdriver (or mechanics stethocscope if you have one) and put the tip to each bearing and the handle to your ear to pinpoint the exact location of the sound - much easier than guessing. Point about the belt routing is also good. All belts can squeal, including genuine - LR just buys belts from the lowest contract bidder that year, so don't think the belt is not the problem just because it says LR on it. Also might want to check for any oil leaks that are getting to a pulley or the belt - these can cause slippage/noise/ etc.

...or use a length of copper tubing as your "mechanic's stethescope" if you're uncomfortable with the idea of putting a screwdriver to your ear and touching it to a spinning alternator. That way you can stand back from the engine some and be able to hear the noise you're looking for. Something else to check - the water pump bearing. Mine wore-out and it would make a squeal noise, sometimes intermittent.

Garret I had done a key word search for squeal and saw your posting way back. I called the bad routing on the belt. You should update your posting. That is not the case hear.
Let's say it is a ball bearing how would I fix that? (actually I don't even know where the bearing are) Someone just said it might be the bearings.
John where is the h20 pump?

Thanks guys,
