another question-
how do you know when to replace the spark plugs and wires?
all on a 97 Disco with 62000 miles...

Why do you think you need to replace the alternator. The answer would be when it fails which it should not be. Are you getting electrical power failure?
Rovers love new spark plugs. I as well as others on this sight have upgraded to larger wires and different plugs. It seems to help with power and mileage but not a whole hell of a lot. If you do a keyword search undet plugs I am sure you will see the debates for NGK plugs and Magnecore wires.
