I am looking at a used 1999 land rover discovery with about 28k. I like the vehicle, but have read messages from several people with lots of problems. I need this for work everyday. If I buy this am I going to spend lots of time getting it fixed at the dealer, or is it generally reliable. I do a lot of off-road driving on construction sites, and have had no luck with a ford explorer. Any help would be appreciated.

I was looking at Discovery's and also read all those stories of people having problems with theirs. But, I also read alot of people's posts about how they love their discovery and are having alot of fun with it. So I went ahead and bought a 2001 LE. So far it has been great with no problems. Also, they were redesigned in 1999 and alot of the Disco's people complained about that I read were 1998 and below. If the price is right go for it.

I have a 99 Disco SD1 with about the same mileage (29k). It's a daily driver, I have and will continue to take it off-road to utilize the purpose it was built and modified. The vehicle is not perfect, nothing in life is, but I have had no regrets in making this purchase (outside of gas mileage, LOL). You have to take care of your equipment, the responsibility of ownership, with that you will notice things as they happen and take care of the small problems before they turn into big ones. You still have the balance of the warranty to resolve incidentals the vehicle may incur. People are, all to often, quick to be critical of those things they know nothing. If you like it....buy it...and get on with living.

Yes Bob , anything equipment needs care. If you take that equipment off the highway it needs more. I kinda frown on the 99 series II but the 99 series I is a nice truck , real nice truck..

Yes Bob. Its the best suv for the buck especially buying it used since it has depreciated the biggest percentage. It may have a few annoyances from time to time but you'll have fun pulling out Ford explorers. Powertrain warranties are relatively cheap from Autoadvantage, if your worried, once your warranty expires.

People post their problems here in hopes of getting helpful suggestions. People who don't have Disco problems are out dealing with all of their other problems (just not on this bBoard). Trust me, the worst Disco will beat the pants off the best Ford Explorer any day of the week.

LoL,

Disco's are kinda like my dog:

You feed it daily
You take it on walks, Pavement and on the trails
You give it water
Give it love and attention
Give it a few mods ( cool collar, leash and doggy bowl set)

In return you get:
Unconditional love
Fun
A playmate that doesnt complain
A well maintained animal....

and of course, if you dont take care of the pup, well it will:
cost you lots of money
be no fun
maybe shit in your house
eat your new shoes, and of course track mud all over:)

Then why is it you are hanging out here? I would like an LX 450 (an FJ 80 with nicer leather none of this LX 450 IFS EAS crap) but the resales are so high I could get a few more rovers for what it would cost me.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Wednesday, May 30, 2001 - 06:07 pm: Edit

Ya I know. My logic was I could afford several rovers therefore garanteeing me that at least one would provide transport on a given day with approximately the same certainty of one TLC.

The FJ 62 (slushbox) I liked better than the FJ 60 and the FJ80/LX450 is quite capable especially with the rear electronic locker.

Should you buy a Land Rover?

Answer: Maybe. When I bought my first Rover, I knew there would be quirks (all my volvo's did, and my vw's). I'd replaced engines in my other cars, done ring jobs, transmissions, clutches, etc.

My '88 Rangie didn't run right from the time I bought it (fuel pump). I had a non LR dealer diagnose it, and had problems. As soon as I took it to the dealer, everything was fine.

Since you're buying a newer ('99) I would first visit you're local dealership ( you knowing you're not purchasing one from them) and find out how long it takes to get a vehicle in for service. If they take less than 2 days (as both dlr's here do) then they're probably good.

I bought my '96 almost exactly 1 year ago. Here's what's been done to it since:

replaced rear door lock actuator (normal)
replaced front power widow actuator (normal)
oil changes every 3k
OME springs
OME shocks
60k service
front brake pads
replaced intake manifold
spark plug wires
K&N air filter

Did I lift it under warranty? Yes, and it's still covered under the warranty. Do they encourage off-roading? Yes.

Will it piss you off from time to time? Yes, but then so does your wife.

It's not a car, it's a way of life.

my 3 cents

I actually have a Disco that my wife drives, unfortunately only on pavement. We haven't had many problems with the Disco, but when we have them they seem to be at the wrong time. I would buy a Land Cruiser because of it's reliability. I have a '99 LC with 33,000 and have never had any problems. I wish I could say the same thing for the Disco.

I think you better get off this discussion before you have a lot of Landie owners pissed. Give me a Land Cruiser discussion board so that I can tell them the truth: LAND ROVER DISCOVERY IS BETTER. The Disco is far better then the Cruiser. When I went to Africa last summer, I went on a desert safari thing with a couple of TLC's(like 97 models i think). We got stuck like 3 times, and guess what came to our rescue...A Land Rover Discovery, it winched 2 of those overbuilt craps right out of the 3ft. sand in which they were buried. After that the Disco crawled right up where we got stuck to piss off the Cruiser dudes even more!! Ha...Land Cruisers, what are they good for besides getting us Landie owners pissed and for us Landie owners to piss on!!!

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Peter Matusov on Thursday, May 31, 2001 - 10:18 pm: Edit

what's the buzz about the TLC? Wonder where the ToyotaDude lives.
Can't fit in the goddamn parking space, much less between the trees on trail.
FJ100 is already a joke...

33kmi and no problems... wonder how it fares as a criterion for a vehicle to be good or bad.

go for it, make the dealer fix all the bugs under warranty, and enjoy the ownership for a couple hundred thousand miles.

Looking at a couple of 4-door Land Cruisers ('83 & '95), I noticed they have swivel ball housings very similar to the Discovery, which I assume dates back to the original Range Rover of the early '70s, if not earlier. Also noticed the LCs' ladder chassis does not look quite as robust as Land Rover's.

Just wondering if Land Cruiser copied its 4WD system from Land Rover?

Guys come on the newer land criusers are to big for most trails in the southeast where i live I dont know about out west but id sure like to see a big land cruiser go play in Tellico hahahahah
It just wont happen without substantial abuse the last real cruiser was the fj40 and ive owened one so i know they are tanks but they offer no comfort. Now i own a disco and i love driving ti on and offroad sure ive had problems but its not just a vehicle to most disco owners its just who we are.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jon on Friday, June 01, 2001 - 12:00 pm: Edit

I've compared the two vehicles before, just out of curiosity. The Land Cruiser definitely got an idea from Land Rover, but not them exclusively. True, the Land Cruiser's permanent 4WD sure rings a bell about the way Land Rovers work, but the Cruiser's leaf-sprung rear and torsion bar-sprung front resembles a set-up Cheep used to have. I don't really see anything mechanically wrong with a Land Cruiser (excepting the fact it's less capable than a Land Rover) but it just seemed so bland and lacked any character, like it was nothing more than a jacked-up Avalon wagon or something. And it was just so bloody boring to drive. Even with its 4.7-liter V8, it wasn't any faster than a Rangie, or even a Disco, for that matter. My experience with Japanese automakers is they can only copy a design and improve the quality and reliability, and that's pretty much the extent of a Land Cruiser's virtue: its reliability. Other than that, Japan was just aiming to offer a competitor to the Range Rover with that truck. My opinion is, they missed the mark.

Gabe is right - new Land Cruisers are meant to go off-road as much as the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade are - i.e. NEVER! They are very nice, and very large, luxury vehicles meant to comfort an affluent driver or act as a status symbol (or both). I have seen several mid-90's Land Cruisers beefed-up for off-road duty, but never the brand new ones (don't know what the model designations are and don't care). The ones I have seen are huge, and have to stay out in the open (like the Hummer), or risk damaging that very expensive sheet metal. The FJ40 is indeed a tank like Gabe said, but a D90 drives like a Cadillac Coupe de Ville compared to the FJ40.

Mr. Peanut, work your mojo on a new Land Cruiser for us but leave the FJ40 in my photo gallery alone - I may be buying that one from Other Dude :)

What surprises me about Toyota trucks is the lack of interior room...especially when you consider the sheer size of the new Cruisers...it feels like you're driving a little sports car with legs and feet out in front of you rather than sitting in a full upright position (especially the 4Runner).

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Jon on Friday, June 01, 2001 - 12:17 pm: Edit

All Toyota trucks are like that, and I hate it. A friend of mine has a Ford Ranger, and I ride in it from time-to-time. It sits you upright in a cormal, comfortable position. But I got the chance to ride in another guy's Toyota Tacoma once, and it was like getting in a car. The seat bottom was literally at the floor, and it was just way awkward to ride in.

To really answer the question, "Should I buy a Land Rover?"... Well, it really depends on what you want. I would venture to say that to most of our Land Rovers are much more than mere vehicles, and that most owners of "used" Discovery's didn't buy them for there prestige value but for there capability offroad and there derivability onroad. Not to mention, D-90's are nice, but who wants to pay $30-$50K for a used vehicle just to beat is up offroad when you can get a 3 year old Disco for <$20K and put that extra $$$ into offroad upgrades.

I for one am a Roverholic. Can't explain it but I love my underpowered, sometime temperamental Disco. Like I told a friend of mine who ended up buying a Discovery when he asked me the same question, "I can't tell you to buy it, that might end our friendship. I can tell you that you will get a unique vehicle that may have quirks. You need to make that decision on your own."

On to the Toyota string. Blue is correct, prior to my Disco I owned a 1993 4Runner. It was a good reliable vehicle, with no personality and no room, especially for me (6'4"). I have waltzed my stock Disco over terrain my modified 4Runner had trouble getting through. I would take my modified Disco up against a stock D-90 any day. Plus I can ride home in comfort after a hard day of wheelin'.

So the advice goes as this.... If you want a super reliable generic bland boring truck, get a Toyota and be Joe SUV (Stick to the tarmac, Joe). If you want a vehicle with character that feels solid and safe, with a extremely unique history, and that will take you places stock that many modified vehicles won't go, get the Land Rover.

BTW, my 95' Discovery has been more relieable than my Toyota for the 2+ years I have owned it. However, being a Land Rover, each vehicle has it's own quirks and my friend's Disco has had "issues" that mine has not.

hmmm lets see....a 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser starts of at about $53,000(loaded $60,500). A 2001 Land Rover Discovery Series 2 LE LSE is about $37,000(loaded $42,000). The Discovery is one hell of a deal for the price. If I was spending 53 large, I wouldn't buy an SUV.
I'd be driving a 2001 BMW M3!

When you guys stop jacking each other off and have a little time, go visit Toyota Australia and see what the rest of the world gets to play with. As for lacking off-road capability, this would be interesting news to the mining companies and govt agencies that buy the LC exclusively for its reliability AND ability to live a long life off the tarmac.

I just got back from the movies, and on my way home I saw this guy off-roading in the mud. So I looked closer, and guess what it was...A 2001 Toyota Land Cruiser. He was really unprofessional about it,he was flooring it doing donuts all over the place(he had 0 traction). He finally spun right into a 1' ditch filled with mud/water. So, being the kind person I am, I went out there(easily, left tires completely in the ditch) and recovered his ass!!! I wished that I had my camera, he was so embarrassed!! I couldn't stop thinking of what a coincidence this was. So, there is another instance of Land Rovers kicking the shit out of the poseur!

Alright I guess I am going to have to piss off more people. I like the Land Cruiser because it is reliable. The "character" that you talk about are really flaws. Who wants a driveway spotted with oil. The LC is ordered around the world because of it's off-road ability. I did not buy either my LC or Disco to due any heavy duty off-road. I bet that 95% of the Disco's on the road today never see any off-road. I wish I had the time and the skill to take both my vehicles off-road. You guys are in the minority here. As far as comfort goes the LC is definately more comfortable on long trips than the Disco. I beleive the Disco is a great vehicle, but not the best. You guys have to open you minds to other possibilities. You should also visit www.arctictrucks.com and see what they do with the LC.

While you tick others off I am not bothered. The reason I like LRs is that I can fix them. I can also build them, understand them and generally feel that even though it is a flaming POS that: 1) It will continue to run 2)It will continue to run even under extreme abuse and neglect 3)should it cease to run I will be able to restore it to running condition with a modicum of knowledge and a minimum of tools and equipment. My experience with Toyota and other such Jap stuff is that it will generally run and run well but when it stops I have no idea what has happened nor why it ceased to provide forward progress. In all fairness we should compare apples to apples so to speak as such it is unfair to compare an FJ40 to a Disco but rather an FJ80 to a disco. Well in this light it is pretty clear that you cannot even come close to buying an FJ 80 for what you can get a disco for. while the FJ 80 is good offroad and just as readily modified as the disco, it is larger and less manavueralble, it will also rust and look like crap. The disco will rust but still look good. In any case since I have rambled on a bit my point is why do you refer to it as an LC when all real toyota people know it is a TLC.

yes, Ron, I do have dual TT's on my Disco 1, The rear one came with the Disco when I bought it, I recently bought a front one from Leon Rosser J**p. I really like the combo because my wheelin' doesn't involve rock crawling. I also like them because they have no effect on the paved road. I have rear heavy-duty axles from GBR in the back(which also came with the Disco), so I plan to put a full Detroit Locker in the back later down the road.

Yes, ToyotaDude I had seen the Discovery Channel show that had the two Land Cruisers driving across the artic. They were very impressive. However, look at the price tag that it took to make them like that. With that budget I could have taken a VW bug and done that same thing. Your rig no matter who made it can do whatever you want it to do if you have the cash to pay for it.. Don't think that a disco is comfy on the highway.. Throw 6-7 grand at it and I'm sure that it would be perfect. Land Cruiser doesn't do so well off-road throw 6-7 grand at it and I'm sure it will do just fine. There is nothing that enough money couldn't fix for you. You could go out and get a VW bug and for enough cash you could put the D-90 to off-road shame. If you have the money to get a Land Cruiser and beat the hell out of it then great. Have the money for a Disco to abuse then great. I love my disco but, if I didn't have the money for it I would probably be on a jeep board right now typing an email about if you have enough money get a D-90.. If I wanted a SUV that was comfy and could go down a dirt road and then kick butt on the street and I had 60K+ to spend I would get an ML55. I starts every morning too.. But, I want to keep going once the dirt road ends and I don't have 60K+ to spend so I got a Disco.. I think that it is just right for me. It starts every morning, doesn't leak, and keeps going once the dirt road ends. If I have the money next year I'll throw a little towards Rovertym so that they can make my truck go even farther off the dirt road. Sure it's not the fastest truck, or the best off-road but, then there is always something better no matter what you get. I like my Disco cause for the money it is great on-road and off-road. It gets me from point A to point B no matter what is in the middle and didn't cost me my first born child..

MA - damn, that's funny! Also, ditto what Ron said about (T)LC & LR...my friend and I have taken his '69 FJ40 apart several times - it's a very simple vehicle. I would hate to think about working on a newer cruiser, though. The Disco is also pretty simple (mechanically), aside from the electronic games.

You guys need to remember I never said the Disco was a bad vehicle, I just like the Land Cruiser better. I never bought either of these two vehicles to do any off-roading. My wife likes the Disco much better than the Land Cruiser and she is willing to put up with the problems, I am not.

I don't think anybody really means any offense, Toyota Dude, so you don't really need to be on the defense...for on-road manners and luxury, maybe the LC suits you better (I haven't spent much time in new LC's, so no opinion there...but they sure look nice & comfy :)).

Those Arctic cruisers are pretty sweet. Thanks for the link. They have beefed them up quite a bit...but, you know what? Anyone can engineer 38's or 44's onto a rig and it will look quite impressive:

....im not so sure that last one looks all that impressive...:) as far as the "Artic" trucks go, those things are so far from stock that the only thing still toyota is the body! the frame is stretched, the suspension is custom, the motors are worked, and they probably run $150K. If I were arguing for Toyota, Id find a more realsitc comparison. One more thing, I rolled a Toyota at a point where a Rover would have still been standing....stick that in your pipe and put a flame on it...:)

LOL Dude, you trip me out! "stick that in your pipe and put a flame on it." I guess that's more polite than telling him to put it in his pipe and smoke it LOL But here's a question for all: how do you get the emoticons to appear?

w.r.t. Bob buying a 99 Disco:

I recently went through the same decision process, fretted over the negative postings, then went ahead and bought a '98 LSE with 35K miles. I've had it two months now and love it. There were some minor issues (sunroof rattle, cracking window seals) which the dealer fixed under warrantee. Everything else is running perfectly and I went on a 750 mile roundtrip journey 3 weeks ago.

You are smart to get one with warrantee coverage remaining. I'm not sure if the '99 is a series 1 or 2...but I feel the series 1 would be preferable. You'll save money and it's always risky to buy the first model year.

I watch the local dealer's (Land Rover Scottsdale) inventory pretty closely, and all the used 99 Series II's are priced just a little more than a 98 Series I - I've heard some pretty horrible "first model year" stories from the dealer. Of course, most if not all of these horror stories involve a Scottsdale well-to-do housewife whose mechanical knowlegde ends at "where to stick the key" and "how to flip down the makeup mirror". For what it's worth, I'd avoid a 99 SII just like I'd avoid a 94 SI (I'm sure there are hundreds of you out there who are perfectly content with your 94's and 99's, but you probably know what you're doin a lot more than most, so don't go rabid on me :)).

I bought my 98 LE about 8 months old after a lease came back early in 98 and it had 8k on it. I saved 6 grand for the same model year and they were the dealer that leased it and serviced it so it was in their records. I love my disco. It has had a few issues but all were fixed under warranty no questions asked. They weren't drive issues either. Here's what I had fixed. Both front and rear moon roof rails due to cracks in the aluminum track (1999) no problems since. Cable for lumbar support broke in drivers seat while going up a steep hill (2000) not happened since and could have been avoided if I could get my fat arse away from the diner table :) Oh and I had them hot clue the leather trim on the door pockets back onto the pocket when I got it but, it is pealing off again. Now I know why it was the first and last year they did that. I've been thinking about just replacing them with plastic ones from an older model but, I never really look at my feet when I'm driving any ways so who cares. Any way, my 98 LE has been a really solid trouble free truck and I would highly recommend getting one.

Toyotadude
Your Arctic truck is nothing special. I saw it on Discovery (Extreme Machine's)anyone can do that with $55 to $75k in extras.
As for reliability I don't think any of us bought our Disco's because they are reliable. Anytime you buy a British car you can and will have problems.
And last you said your wife puts up with the Disco problems, not you. Maybe you should go to a Girlymans LC board and let your wife get on the Discoweb she seems to have more class. One thing, I am sure your LC looks nice outside the nail salon when you are getting your nails done (honey)

The latest issue of Four Wheeler Magazine featured a rolled over Defender (same as disco in everyway). The front windshield almost smashed the drivers head. Thats the bad news. The good news is the it went out of the trail at its own power. Even sodas are poured to the leaking radiator to avoid engine meltdown. This proves that even when LR are sick it wont let you down. If this a TLC ToyotaDude you have the answer.

Eric -- I used Superglue to fix those peeling leather trim pieces on my 98 LSE -- still holding fine after 2 months.

Go Land Rover: I have a 94 Disco that just turned 225K miles. Same engine, same tranny, same Tcase, same mechanical everything except for the water pump and radiator. These trucks rock! The same holds true for the series: I have never had any serious trouble with the 5 that I have owned over the years. BTW, they ALL go off road, so my 94 is no mall crawler.
