Anyone know the max weight that the factory roof bars can handle? I am looking at the Yakima system that clamps to the factory bars rather than buying the hi-rise gutter mounts for carrying two kayaks (maybe 110 pounds total?).

If you are going to be carrying two kayaks, in my opinion, you'd be better off with the hi-rise gutter mounts, you can set them wider, to make it more stable. You can also use wider load bars for additional cargo space, like a cargo basket or bike racks.

How wide beween the factory bars VS mounting with the hi-risers? Thanks!

What kind of disco do you have? With the D1, I believe you are limited to the length of the factory bars. With the D2, you can get the optional rear factory bars. For the system that clamps on to the factory bars, you are limited to how far they will spread out. But for the hi-risers, you can fit the 'feet' anywhere you want on the gutter rails, which means you have about 80" to choose where you want them.

I don't own a Disco yet....about 5 to 10 months from purchasing. I am trying to educate myself before I buy. I understand what you're saying about the width of the factory Vs hi-risers now, and the length limitations...checked out a Disco today on the street. I think the hi-risers will be best, after considering your comment.

I purchased the Thule racks for my '98 D1.
Load capacity from Thule was 75 kg per pair.
Way better than trying to create a short rack using clamps to the factory bars.

I too am looking to get into kayaking. It looks like the Hi Racks are the way to go. Any suggestions on which kayak mounts to get?
