my 96 d1 w/ auto has developed a new drive train noise at 130,000 miles. before i spend a fortune at the local LR dealer having it diagnosed, i thought i'd check here first if anyone else has experienced it.

- noise is a "whirring growl" on deceleration from about 5 mph to stop heard inside the cabin only -- not evident outside the car.
- this is a new noise on top of the "normal" transfer case whine that has been there since day 1, but the drive train seems to have also developed a newer, different frequency vibration
- possibly in transfer case or transmission, as noise goes away if either TC or TM is shifted into neutral on deceleration.
- drained oil and took lower cover off transfer case - no large "chunks" or evident damage
- have checked u-joints and replaced rotoflex
- TC is not diff-locked and does not seem to be binding up
- car has never been driven diff-locked on pavement, been off-road a total of about 1000 light duty miles.
- doesn't seem to be wheel bearings
- driven the car about 400 hiway miles since noise started -- nothing further seems to have broken as yet.
- tranny oil seems o.k. and checked both differentials.

thanks,

bill

i've narrowed this down to the bearing on the front output shaft of the transfer case.

shaft also seems to have about a sixteen of an inch of up/down play it in.

anybody:

(a) had this bearing go out on them?

(b) know if you have to remove the transfer case to get the bearing out? exploded parts diagram seems to show that the bearing can be removed w/o removing the entire TC, but none of my manuals or AllData has a procedure for this.

thanks,

bill

Check with Borg-Warner, since they make the TC. Probably won't get much help, but it's worth a shot. May just need to have the sucker rebuilt.

Has anyone purchased a rebuilt transfer case from Atlantic-British? They offer ones for about $1600 plus about $200 shipping for the D1.

New one from the dealer is $3500.

Looks like I'm just going to get used to the new noise and see how long I can go before something breaks.

It is of questionable value to put $2-$3K into a car that has depreciated too quickly to around a wholesale bluebook of $13K.

Can not help you but ECR has them for 1450.

$13K? with 130,000 miles? I just bought a 96 with 122K for $5500. I would seriously rethink investing 3 grand in that truck, unless you have alot of time, effort and $$ already invested in it..

NOOOO!

Rebuilt LT230 $800 from ashcroft in England or there are low mileage used ones for that in the US, But I think it is just the bearing/maybe the front of the case is worn where the bearing sits and needs tobe machined to fit an oversized bearing. I know robison service knows about this one, maybe call and ask if just replacing the bearing does not work. Dealers just replace the whole thing. Don't.

Ron

PS If anyone sees any disco is the 5500 range let me know

Dunk-you-shane.

(thank you in phonetic german)

I wonder what he will take for it? Sounds suspeciously like it needs a new tranny too.

Ron, I just ran 3 Discos thru here at less than $5500. One was a 94 with 133,000 miles @ $4000.00, the second was a 95 with 147,000 miles @ $3700, the third was the 96 @ $5500. That was just in the last two weeks, I see a ton of them. Let me know if you ever want to me send pics or specs on anything in that range, usually they just go to wholesalers...

I paid $8K for my 94 Ron...so they are out there. Have spent about another $1500 on upgrades and stuff including the chip and Piper camshaft. Done 120K now and I plan on keeping it for quite a while. The white one on ebay I wouldn't touch with a barge pole...loads of work there is my guess.

Thanks Gil,

I sent you an email. 94-95 (no 96) 5 speed would be my first choice (I am a glutton for punishment I know the auto is better I just miss the clutch)

Given the number of hours I put in LR repairs each week "minor" problems like a new T-box don't bug me much although buying from an unknown source on ebay I don't like much. I helped put an engine in on Memorial day so I think I could probably scrounge up some help to put in a t-box.

has anyone ever actually bought something on ebay (besides an imitation Italian Renaissance ceramic lamp in the shape of a poodle)?

I buy a lot of rover stuff from there. Its all about the sellers feedback. Good feedback means you are probably ok. Plus most of the rover stuff sellers I know who they are so I don't worry much.

Blue, ive never bought on ebay, but Ive sold at least 40 cars on there. Its amazing that someone from Minnesota or Washington would buy used cars sight unseen out of Connecticut. It blows my mind that someone would do that, but hey it couldnt be easier for me, they send me a fedex with a bank check ,I toss the car on a truck, and then give it a big wave goodbye.....:)

Bearing number is a 6207. I dont think thats it. I am voting on a Ring and pinion problem. Either front or rear. Sounds like its too deep meaning something is probably loose. Maybe a pinion nut or the pinion bearings.

So based on your analysis the take out a driveshaft test would help. Also you usually hear dif problems outside more than in and he says no hearing it outside.

boy, this discussion was getting very depressing with the used car prices being discussed...

after a couple of spins around the block w/ the head LR mechanic here, he suggested pulling the transfer case (11 hours labor+parts) and fixing it if I wanted to drive the car on long trips, but just "turning up the radio" if I was going to just drive it around town.

I'm about a 1,000 miles "into" the new transfer case growling noise now and it doesn't seem to be getting any louder or worse. I've taken both drive shafts off and the noise is definitely coming from the transfer case - not the differentials or the transmission.

Since both mechanics I talked to insisted that careful assembly and preloading of the bearings in the transfer case was important, neither considered a "cheap" rebuilt a good solution.

Looks like my "best 4x4" gets relegated to being my commute car...

Other than the leaks and the really lousy electical system, I've really enjoyed driving the 120,000 miles I've put on this car and fully expected it to go at least 200,000 miles.
