I believe I have seen post in the past of someone who had installed a Warn M12000 on their Disco. Anyone have this setup ?

Yeah, I have one. It's mounted on a non-airbag ARB, and bolted right on without any modifications other than having to relocate the solenoid box.
If you don't see any pictures of it on this site, check www.axelfiles.com

Axel, that's what I thought. My local 4x4 shops are telling me that the M12000 will not fit in the Disco non-airbag ARB without major modification. Sounds like you had a straight forward install with M12000. I have looked at your site (nice trips & pictures), do you happen to have any close up pictures of the winch install ? Also, I would be interested in any tips you might have as I'll be installing the ARB/winch myself.

Just got the same setup - ARB non-air bag and Warn M12K at advice of others (such as Axel, above) on this board. The 12K bolts right in with no issues. The ARB kit includes all the cables necessary to remount the solenoid to the bar, so that is not a hassle either. Only downside is weight (winch 130#) + bumper. If interested in the 12K, let me know because I got it for $850.00 delivered (in the 48 states) and can pass along the source. Maybe it's cheaper elsewhere, but I couldn't find any better.

Bill B, Yes, I would be interested in your source for the M12000 either post or email me directly. The local shops are in the $1,100 range for the winch. I did find the ARB non-airbag bumper for $610 locally. Based on no shipping charges this seems a fair price.
As for the weight of the M12K/bumper I have OME HD's installed front and rear. I figure the front is going to come down some with the winch install. I am planning to measure and install Rockware spring spacers in the front to get the height back. Has the additional weight been an issue for your install ? (handling on or off road, etc.)

Why on earth put a 12K winch on a 5K truck? I have had my Disco in mud half way up the doors and my 9K winch pulled me right out. The extra weight will kill the life of your springs and pull the front end down.

Because you can!!!! (springs are cheap - who cares). Seriously though, it is the only Warn winch that bolts in with no hassles on an ARB bar now without extra mounting kits and clearance issues.
I also listed the as listed factory weight with wire rope - once a switch to Amsteel is made - weight drops considerably.

Why put a 12K winch on a 5K truck? When you are half way up Suicide Hill in Pritchett Canyon with a loaded Disco, a ravine to your right and the only thing holding you is your winch cable, it will be pretty obvious to you that sometimes bigger is better........

Warn does not manufacture the M10000 anymore, my alternative was a MileMarker with Hydraulic pump on the PTO (MaxiDrive). Once I started my $$ research the Warn was the better choice. With the M12K my needs will be met with low amp draw, and a slow steady speed. As others have mentioned, I'm not trying to start the 'which winch' discussion, I'm just trying to meet the needs I have with my rover. This includes agricultural work, tree farming, recovering other equipment (not just the disco the winch is attached too), etc. I figure that's why the manufactures make so many different choices of winch.....

Axel is right. Pritchet Canyon set my 8000 lb winch on fire. Smoke and flames... it was a goner. Then I was at the mersy of others with 12,000 lb winches, since no one gets out of Pritchet, in either direction, without winching.

On that day, I was wishing for a 12K pounder winch!

my fault, didn't mean to post twice....one last note on springs, I agree that the added weight will be an issue though the OME HD's specifications are rated to handle an additional 50-110kg (243lbs). With the M12K I realize that I will be right at the max weight. 130lbs winch, 70lbs ARB, 40lbs additional battery....actually include the battery wiring and I'm over a little....

Safety aside...
Can you do undercarriage work in your garage by lashing to an overhead STEEL beam, and just whinching upward? Block the truck and realease the winch pressure?

The new warn M15000 weighs and it is the same as the warn 12000 dimensionaly ,but it has stronger lower gears and 7/16 cable instead of the 3/8 of the 12000 winch..If you can mount a warn 12000 you can mount the new M15000 ,and the cost is no more than $120.I paid $1100 includiding shipping from the 4wheel wholesaleers.

ok...
i know that the bigger is better theory is usually nice and works fine...but i just saw the weight of the m12,000 and m15,000...and that is scary...
i mean, that is like having 2 9000lbs winches!
i know that certain times, the more power will help, but i'm going to go with a different route:
get the Ramsey Platinum 9000lbs and a snatchblock.
i think that would work fine
no?
:)

I like the m15000 but did you check the line speed on that thing. It is SLOW. I mean 2.5 ft/MIN at full load. There is no electrical system that could handle that that would fit in a disco. I think 12k is the limit of usefulness.

I think that Warn should offer a bosche upgrade with the M15,000 for those of us who have lucas electrics...or else...
