Hi All
I had read on some advertising that there are
electronic rust prevention systems for cars.
Does anyone have any experience with them.
Do they work ?
THey're suppose to have a electronic device
and 6 to 8 anodes attach to car panels to
prevent rust.??
worth the money or not.
thanks
David Wang

honestly im no oxidation expert, but i know that the reason rovers rust or corrode is due to the aluminum touching the steel frame causing electrolitic (i think) reaction.. So i would think that whatever charge you may need (+/-) would help the situtation, if not stop it all together.. never really thought about it, but sounds cool..
Hope that helps you!
Ben

The system you describe is used widely in industry to protect buried metal tanks and boats.
The anode is typically magnesium and is 'sacrificial'. Over a period of time, the anode oxidizes and 'rusts' away. I don't know how well that it would work on any automobile.
My feelings are that if it was a good system, most auto manufacturers would have used it years ago instead of expensive paint or galvanizing.
Hope that that helps

thanks for your comments.

SmokinBro: You're talking of a different system, where you have sacrificial ANODES - what you use on ships, boats etc. This system depends on the water for its process.
Electronic rustproofing is a CATHODIC system, and works by giving an excess of electrones which are released for oxidation. RUst IS electrons being released, so theory is you supply those electrons from your battery.
Can NOT stop rust, reduces SPEED of rust.
System is used for bridges and other steel (or steel/concrete) constructions, but are then wired up with sensors (humidity, temperature, etc) and a computer distributing electrons where they're needed.
Found no hardproof evidence of system working up to theory, though lots of good testimony to system. Try an internet search!

Frode;
oxidation is oxidation no? - however it doesn't matter. I've never heard of a system for automobiles. If there were one, I beleive that the automakers would use it. No?
I think that the Advertising that david saw was designed to remove money from your wallet, not prevent your car from rusting.!
