Hey guys, anybody got the NAPA part# for the steering stabilizer? I'm getting alot of shake when I go over rough roads at any kind of speed (98 Disco I)

I was having a similar problem. I took it to the LR dealer because my 98' Disco is still under factory warranty. They gave me a new steering dampner, new front shocks, and balanced the wheels. I only had to pay 50 bucks for the wheel balance. Isn't your Disco still under warranty?

I've just been there done all that!!

Found worn front bushes at the radius arm to front axle housing and radius arm to chassis mounting.

Also found that a TJM Series 2000 oil steering damper (virtually brand new) was "NFG".

Had the bushes replaced and fitted a Bilstein (GAS) steering damper and all seems well.

I think that uneven tyre wear was causing the wobble to start then everything else that was worn let it get really bad. The other day, before the fixes, I had to pull over 10 times because of uncontrollable front wheel wobble.

Wheel shimmy is very common and will get bad once all the loose bearings,joints,bushes,etc.add to it.The answer is, once swivel preload,wheel bearings,all suspension bushes and steering damper check out okay is to get the wheels balanced right.This must be done off the vehicle,if rims are alloy balance using cone mount on centre. If landrover steel rims they must be done on a five hole balancer using original nuts if poss.We have also found discoveries to steer badly but not shake, ie just kind of wander about road.This is also a wheel imbalance problem.Keep trying its worth it!

Unfortunatley My Disco is out of warranty with 92K miles. Got a part# for that Bilstein unit? How much was it?
I dont think it's a tire balance problem because it's not there on smooth road at any speed, it just shows up after I hit potholes or rough pavement. I'll check the radius arm bushings though.

Also make sure your rear tires are 6 or 8 lbs higher pressure than fronts. Discos do much better with this setup. Another thing to check is if the pinch bolts on the steering linkage in the engine compartment are tight. I had loose ones, and the steering became normal once they were tightened. It also cured shaking when hitting potholes.

Go with Old Man Emu steering dampner - see Nathan about that. Original equipment dampner is junk. Bilstein is great dampner, but I've heard that it "holds" the steering wheel (you have to manually return wheel to straight position after making a turn).

I'll have my 1 yr old, used, great condition OME dampner for sale in a few weeks after I install relocate kit (relocation requires D90-size dampner). However, you should fix this problem NOW, not later.

Not sure about "pinch bolt" term, but you basically have to check and retorque all bolts involved in the steering mechanisms. Also check bushings - as these wear, you get a lot of sloppy movement in the mechanism that retorquing won't completely fix.
