Ok,

To successfully brake you have to push the pedal most of the way to the floor and even then it is not as good as I think it should be. The fluid was bled professionally and is new castrol. I am thinking vacuum leak but that would make the pedal hard right? Pads have plenty of life yet. No pulling one way or the other (ie no siezed calipers). Bad MC? I dunno. what gives? What should I check next?

If your booster was not working the pedal would be harder to push. I'm guessing bad MC since you say the lines were bled. If there's only little air in the line, pumping the pedal should improve your breaking. If there's too much it will doo what you describe. Internal MC leak will do the same.

I'm not sure what happens when there's air in the ABS module but I will remove mine eventually.

Is this a Disco2? I have 2000 Disco2 and have been experiencing the same problems. I have a really mushy pedal, but if you don't let your foot all the way off the brake and then reapply quickly, I get a real stiff pedal. I took it into the dealer and had them check it out under warranty. They said that it was normal and that if there was a problem present, one of the idiot lights on the dash would appear. I still don't think that it is normal.
