The t-box, front and rear axles, and swivel pin housings all call for GL4 fluids. Has anyone used Red Line MTL for this? I know that LR uses grease up front in the swivel balls now.

Any comments?

Hey Jeff,

The Transfer case, and front and rear differentials in particular should have GL-5 Gear oils. Use Redline 75w90. MTL was designed specifically for manual gearboxes, and will not provide the same protection to the ring and pinions in particular. MTL is also a lighter weight oil (70W80) than is called for in both the transfer case and differentials (75W90).

RedLine is excellent stuff, I've used it for years and hundreds of thousands of miles in many different vehicles, but I wouldn't use MTL in the differentials... Now I'd definitely consider using MTL in the R380 manual though....

Hmmmm...

I just popped open the Haynes Manual and it calls out GL4 for the t-box and axles and calls out Dexron IID ATF for both the auto and manual transmission. The owners manual is in the truck, so I'll have to wait until my wife brings it back home.

If it's actually GL5, I should be able to use the Red Line 75W90NS.

Hey Jeff,

Your Truck, ultimately your decision. GL-5 Gearoils have better Extreme Pressure Additives than GL-4 oils, which is exactly what you want for ring and pinions. The Disco Manual actually just says 80W90 EP(Extreme Pressure) in the specs. The Transfer case would get by okay on GL-4 if you prefer, but GL-5 would be better in there as well. You want to stay away from GL-5 gear oils in manual transmissions because some of the additives break down the brass syncro components, and ultimately cause hard shifting and grinding.

As for the Tranny, yes the Auto and the manual both call for ATF. RedLine has an ATF called D4 that was specifically designed for these applications, and MTL will work as well. Regular ATF does not provide enough bearing and gear protection for the manual in my Opinion, and I would run one of these RedLine products, D4 if you have warrantee concerns, as it meets ATF specs, but also exceeds GL-4 Gear Oil Specs.

The 75W90NS, by the way, was developed for manual transaxles (such as front wheel drive or all wheel drive cars) that need to protect the differential's ring and pinion as well as the transmissions gears, snycros and bearings with the same oil. While it is GL-5 rated and can be used without issue in a standard differential, its real purpose is to provide good shiftablilty while still maintaining good protection for the ring and pinion.

Like I said, your truck, your decision. See WWW.REDLINEOIL.COM for more specifics if you need them. Hope this helps...

Scott, I wasn't trying to contradict you. I was about the make a purchase based on the manual's info. I wanted to post here first to get some feedback.

We've got an Auto transmission. If this was your truck, what would you use in the transmission, t-box, axles, and swivel balls?

I've got some down time coming up next week, so it's a good time to put on the coveralls, climb underneath, and get the fluids up to date.

Jeff,
I run the MTL in both the transmission (5 speed) and in the transfer case. It was amazing how much noise was reduced by changing to the MTL. The diffs and swivels have just a regular 90w. This is in a 94 Disco with 100,000 miles.

Hey Jeff,

I currently run RedLine Products in four vehicles. The Rovers ('95 D-90 and '96 5 speed Disco) run RedLine 15W40 engine oil and 75W90 in the swivel balls, front and rear differential and transfer case. They both currently have RedLine D4 ATF in the manual gearboxes, but I am going to be switching them over to MTL soon. Just switching to D4 made a huge difference in shifting in My D-90, but less so in My Disco (third gear engagement still a tad rough). Now that I've heard a few people are running the MTL in the R-380's without issue, I will be switching over. Hopefully this will smooth out the Disco's shifting even more....
