On my way to the dealer next week if I can't find out what this is this weekend. I'm hoping someone here can help me out! Here's the scoop-'98 SI 140,xxx miles, runs great, drives great, but I have a tapping noise that seems to be coming from the torque converter area. This has been going on for about a month now, sometimes it will quit for a day or two but it always comes back. One tap for one engine revolution. Does not matter if it's Park, Reverse, Drive, etc.. or if Hi, low or lock, does not matter what RPM, although anything over about 2500 and the engine drowns it out. Does ANYONE have ANY ideas what this could be? It's driving be crazy!

Converter bolts could be loose. Its sounds just like that when it happens. Could be allot of otehr things as well though but its easy to check that.

Kyle, I already checked all the converter bolts. Any other ideas? I was thinking mabey a cracked flexplate or mabey a bearing in the converter itself?

Yep , cracked flywheel/flex plate will do it as well. The bolts can be loose and that will do it. As I said before , its really hard to tell from here :)

Hallo,
I suppose we are talking about a 3.9 or 4.0 l V8 engine. What bothers me is that you speak about "one tap for one revolution" This means from idle to about 2500 rpm a frequency of 10 to 40 taps per second which for me this is not a tapping noise and therefore I would rather think about valve frequency. On this V8 engine the alloy valve rockers have a steel insert which from time to time come loose. Rather have a look in that direction.

The rocker arms are a good tip another likly cause is the catalyst medium in the passenger side cat rattling. Hold the tip of a screwdriver against it and the handle of the screwdriver to your earlobe to check it
