I enjoy a narrower tire for the winter, but still don't want to get stuck in the spring mud. I'm considering a 245/? tire. What should be the second number be???
Any suggestions.(brand or size)
I'm running an aggressive tread now: (Cooper discoverer stt) but a stock size: (225/75). These are for sale...check classifieds
Now with 2" + more clearance these tires look a bit puny.

HELP???THANKS...

245/75-16 BFG MT.

245/75R16 Goodyear MT/Rs. They kick BFG MT's butt.

How much trimming on the 245/75R16s? I have a SG front bumper and a 2" RoverTym lift.

Thanks,
Mike

I'll let somebody else answer that. They should fit without trimming, really, but every vehicle is different and in the worst case you may have to trim very little off the rear fender just behind the tire. Sometimes just trimming the fender lip (or bending it inwards) helps. This way the fender stays stock visually.

Mike, I'm soon to have the same setup as you from rovertym. Did you remove your sway bars?

Also..someone recommended to go with 235/85-16's.
This is a tall tire, I won't know if they fit in there unless I buy them

Buy the 235 85 R16.

They fit with a little trimming.

There must be a loss of Power to a 95 Disco w/ those giant tires???

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Monday, March 05, 2001 - 12:24 pm: Edit

Slider,
2 thing one: yes some loss of power
two: if you want Goodyear MTRs Wal-mart (yes wal-mart) has specatularly good prices on them. Look for one that does tires.

Why do some consider the MTR's better? What type of terrain are you running in?

Goodyear are prone to sidewall weaknesses....BFG are better

Are the 225/70 16 Michelins to big for a Disco 1 with Old Man 2" lift? The local dealer states they put these on the 16 Disco 2's and these would look and ride great.

I removed the rear sway bar after putting on the RoverTym springs and Rancho RS9000 shocks. In my opinion, there was way too much sway at 70 MPH on open road. Below 60 it was fine. I had the LR dealer re-align my front and and it helped some. Now, I just disconnect my rear sway bars when I get to where ever I am going to play. I am working on building a set of rear sway bar disconnects using the info from Alan Foster (on the www.d-90.com website). After I get things a little more settled (new winch and bumper being installed), I will try to disconnect the front anti-sway bar to see what happens.

Thanks,
Mike

I am about to switch from LR HD springs (1.5") lift (Rovers North) and Bilstein shocks (awesome for highway handling) to Rover tym 3" lift. I never do anything without tons of research. I will not run the highway without the sway bars due to my beloved roof rack. John at Rover Tym makes a disconnect for the bars. I am going from 245-75 mud tires to either 235-85 or Super swampers (32") and steel rims (see Tom Pearson's pics). I will keep the LR rims and 245s for town and light trips. I will not carry as much on the rack. To all those about to buy a winch (I also have a wench), I did the research for you. The Warn Multi Mount is awesome! Swaps to the back in 60 seconds. Install the plug front and back. Make sure you are getting the new style (flat steel plate front and back, not the old style tube. Macromotive was free shipping making it almost $200 less than 4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers!

MT/R's have stronger sidewalls than BFGs. They also offer better grip on road, in snow, on ice, in dirt and on rocks. I don't know how well they do in mud but I bet better than BFG MT's. Get out of the dark ages and try tires different (and better) than everybody else has. They're worth it.

I have got a 2" lift and 245/75 Goodyear MTR,s
This is an excellent set up and I can not fault it and you will not have to do any triming with these tyres.
Stick with the MTR,s and ditch the BFG,s before they ditch you.

I just got a set of BFG trac edge 235/85/16 and I'm VERY PLEASED ith them. They are aggressive enough for anything and mellow enough for road use. The BFG AT/KO are great too, but they are just as loud! For the added cleats, the Trac Edges are definately the way to go. Look at Gabe Rodriguez under the photo gallery for pics. They fit great with a little trimming. Also, if you plan to "Stuff" them into your wheelwells from time to time, they fit... PERFECTLY!

Goodyear MTs had the weak sidewalls, Goodyear MTRs were designed to be much stronger in the sidewalls.

Ron

PS the walmart near me carries MTRs, and they are cheap (well cheap for MTRs)

Ron;

Have M/Ts on my 94. Explain sidewall situation, please. Am I gonna do a Ford Explorer ala Firestone?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Ron on Monday, March 19, 2001 - 10:26 am: Edit

No, not at all. The goodyear MTs just would blow sidewalls on rock climbing so they got a bad rap and did not sell that great, hence the MTR came out. R=reinforced. Don't worry.

I'm With Gabe (Thanks for the E-mail by the way Gabe), The BFG Trac Edge is the ultimate swiss army knife of tires. Open Shoulder lugs for off-road traction, More closely spaced center lugs (though still wider that the average AT)for street work, and sipped tread blocks for snow/rain/ice traction. Also Available in all ranges of sizes. 215/85-16 (30.6" Tall), 245/74-16 (30.4" tall), and 235/85-16 (32" Tall -My Favorite)....

I have 110 HD set up from RN with Bilsteins, no sway bars and run Cooper STT 750 r 16s when off road and the stock Michelins when on road. No regrets, and more flexible than BFG MT.
Some loss of acceleration, but on the upside the speedo is now 100% accurate according to my local PD trailer mounted speed radars..

Another vote for the BFG Trac Edge. They are a great all terrain tire. I ran the 215/85 for the longest time and was very impressed. They do well in snow and have surprising traction in mud and dirt. On road, especially in rainy conditions, they feel very sturdy and handle hard breaking well. I just upgraded to the 235/85. This is a nice size for a lifted Disco.

Well I'll put in one more plug for the MT/R's. I've had a chance to compare them to BFG MTs and AT's in snow and the MTR's did better than MT's and as well or better than the AT's. On the street they're also as grippy and quiet as the AT's. In any other conditions they're better than both BFG's. If I think that the BFG AT or MT is one of the best all-around tires, and the MTR is even better, I'm not gonna look anywhere else. If I want an off-road tire, I'll get another Swamper, Bogger or Simex. For dual purpose tire, MTR fits the bill really well.

How much are you paying for each Goodyear MTR with standard manufacturer's warrantu? For each BFG Trac Edge?

MTRs are 129 from walmart for the 245 75 R16. Dunlops R/T are about 100. I dunno on the trac edges.

BFG Trac Edge 235/85/16 cna be found at Wal-Mart... for $114 a pop. As for the strength, my guess is that they are prety strong being that they are in the load range "E" category, please correct me if I'm wrong. I called everywhere trying to avoid the "Another beaner with his Land Rover buying tires at Wal-Mart" commentary but found that they are the most economical, and they don't have the frickin' Discount Tire or NTB ATTITUDE! My dos centavos for Wal-Mart.

Please excuse the spelling.. I'm sorry for trying to type faster than I should (and forgetting to proof-read!)
BTW, whatever tire you choose, at least go with the 32" size. You will be pleased as long as the tread is at least a semi-aggressive pattern.

245/75 equals what in floatation size. I know that it is about 31" tall, but how wide is it(in inches)?

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of pageLink to this message   By Milan on Monday, March 19, 2001 - 11:44 pm: Edit

245/75R16 is about 31x9.50
235/85R16 is more like a 32x9.0 or a narrower 9.50 (maybe like the 33x9.50 BFG MT - really narrow even for a 9.5 section width)
