If changing only the tranny oil, how many quarts of oil is needed? I understand it's about 7 quarts for a full change when changing filter as well. thanks!

Stupid follow up question to tack on...
Is changing the tranny fluid on the Disco (automatic) same as most other V8's? Drop the drain plug, out with the old, and pour the new fluid down the dipstick/fill tube? Just curious if there are any LR secrets to know about. Haynes suggests it's too difficult to tackle... ;->

According to my shop manual (95 Disco), you remove the dipstick, remove the drain screw from the tranny sump, drain, and refill with 19.2 PINTS (just under 10 qts)of ATF Dextron III. Also, according to the manual, some fluid will remain in the torque converter--refill level to "high" mark on the dipstick. I'd start low and work my way up.

Jeff,
If you want to change the filter too it is PITA job. You have to remove the exhaust and also remove the tranny x member for which you may need to "spread" the frame a bit to get it to come out.
Not as bad as bushings though. Definately a DIY if you are motivated as it is more time than difficulty.

Just a word of caution... I learned long ago not to mess with automatic transmissions - especially ones you have to spread the truck frame to get to certain parts.

I'm showing the filter was serviced in just before we purchased it at 36k miles.
I was planning to just change the fluid now. The Filter should be good to go for a while. My motivation is not nearly high enough to pull the exhaust and spread the frame!
