Has anyone else had this happen??
Whilst driving in sand in South Australia,car packed to the roof with gear.We noticed an audible clicking sound coming from the rear diff.I backed up a few metres , no joy still there.So being a little impatient I accelerated quite quickly from a standing start and was rewarded with a huge "bang".One of the cir clips retaining the differential cross shaft had popped off , allowing the opposite end to clip the pinion and smash the whole unit to bits.My rig is a 95'model series 1update ROSIGNOL .LRA inspected the parts and said it was a component failure! But since the rig had 62,000 miles no replacement!

Yes , its very common here as well.... The pin actually breaks , not the clip , if it was the clip the shaft could only move just a little as the pin is still retained by the ring gear. There are some pics of this in the trails section under the Moab trips..

The model after mine ds2 has now got tapered pins retaining this shaft.This diff centre has been on rover cars since the 60's(yes cars) the only change was the side gears to accomodate the bigger diameter axles.LRA stated that is a comon fault for the clip to sping free on the older models.this is why the new model has the taper pin and not a clip(resorting back to the original design of the mid 60's)

Doesnt matter how they retain it. Its still going to break. even if the both clips come completely out , the ring gear has a lip on it that will hold the pin in place. I belive some of the older rangies hada diff with a thicker pin. That has some impact on failures....
