POSTED BY KEN:

Hey All...

heres a tip (maybe you already know this) to save you money...

the two little lights on either side of the gear shifter (auto) that illuminate the shifter position... P R N 1 2 3... the dealer wanted $5.50 each!! i went down to fry's electronic (local elec. superstore) and found the EXACT same bulbs for .89

the mfg was Black Point products and the part number is MB-0168.

someone should create a conversion page for LR parts, ive read some posts about somekind of motor that is an exact replica of a GM part... albiet much cheaper.

Ken - I have the same problem with that burnt out bulb. My Disco is fairly new to me and my workshop manual is in the mail on its way to me! How do you go about taking stuff apart to change that bulb? I looked at it briefly, and I don't want to wreck anything by going into it blind.
Thanks
Stephen
(that conversion page you mentioned would be great!)

Hi all

glad to help put my .02, changing the bulb is a 5 min process.

1. remove the bezel around the shift indicator. this is tedious at best... if you look at the shift indicater. there is a ring that goes around the very outside of it. pull it backwards and lift up... there are two little pins up front that it catches on.
2. remove the rubber mat
3. now you wil see two plugs on either side of the shift indicater, these are the plugs that hold the light bulbs. pull them straight out(these are tought little buggers, but they will come out.
4. once out simple pull the old bulb out and plug the new ones in...

reverse the process and your done!!!

hey whoever is the moderator. how about creating a section for "quick fixes/conversion parts" this could be really helpful.

These plugs must be built like the window control switch plugs on the back of the window control switches. There is a springy lever on opposing corners you have to depress then they slide right off the switch. I had to take my consol partly off when I mounted my CB on the back of the cubby and these plugs were a PIA.

Incidentaly, I received some really neat feedback from a chap in Florida about the CB antenna bracket I made for his Disco. It's the one shown on the Tech page. I love it when a plan comes together :-)

Ken
Thanks so much for the advice and 'how-to'. I just finished the job and it went smoothly and was easily done.

jet99, which lights aren't working? Climate control backlight? The lights in the remote function switches on the instrument bezel? Window switches? Dome lights? The only ones you can't easily change are those remote switches (which require the purchase of a new switch). Most everything else takes a teeny-tiny bulb that you can buy in 2-packs at auto parts stores. Even Wal-Mart! Can't remember the bulb numbers, though...
