i have been wanting a disco for a long time. i have done a lot of research on the different years, and i have decided on a 97,98 disco LE, SE. i noticed that they have presented a better track record as far as stats go also they are much simpler than the new discos II. i can't see plunking down 30+ for a new vehicle knowing that they depreciate greatly when you drive them off the lot. i am considering this 98 with 36339 miles for 21781. is that a great deal or what. i know that the dealer jacks up the price versus the trade in value. i would also like to know what to look for when driving it. i got a carfax report on several discos, and i noticed that a lot were rental, personal, fleet or commercial leases. is this a danger sign? would this present problems? any advice would greatly be appreciated. you guys sound pretty knowledgeable about your LRs. thanx.

Yes i would say that price is pretty good ($21,781).. As for them being rentals or fleet you want to just make sure they weren't all abused because the drivers "didn't care"... But with 97-98's you aren't going to have electrical problems like alot of the older ones..

What does everyone else think?

Ben makes a very good point in what he is saying. SOmetimes those types of vehicles get abused because the drivers really dont care. On the other hand I am sure the truck has never been off the pavement and is still nice and clean underneath. Just have the thing checked out for the regular stuff . 98 is a good year , although I think all of them are good the 97-98s definately got less bugs...

Good point Kyle...

My disco is in the shop and they have me in a loaner and you tend to try all the things you wouldn't do with your own truck.

I know how I drive rental cars - aggressively, and with reckless abandon. I'd have a dealer look it over regardless.

I bought my 95 V8i NAS for $17,365 last August, reconditioned from an Internet broker (RIP) and was pleased with the condition. I wouldn't buy it "as is" without an inspection or complete warranty for labor and parts for at least 90 days. iMotors did this for me, and I was glad they did. My Discovery was in the shop in the first week after purchase with a jammed sunroof, dead clock, steering-wheel cowling loose and another incidental item I can't recall right now.

After two years, the Land Rover will have made obvious most of the fit and finish problems common to the brand, (e.g. leaking gaskets and weather-seals) but I'd spend the money [if necessary] and have the electrics checked along with body, chassis and drivetrain for leaks, rust and steering / suspension condition. Don't take delivery of a Discovery if the plug wires look burnt or cracked, and the serpentine belt should be devoid of cracking, bushings and linkages (e.g. driveshaft to rear axle) should be in good, uncracked condition.

Best of luck, let us know once you've found a winner!

Cheers,

-Jon

It's too high. There are many well maintaned 98's with similar mileage for between $18-$20K.
