i have been wanting a disco for a long time. i have done a lot of research on the different years, and i have decided on a 97,98 disco LE, SE. i noticed that they have presented a better track record as far as stats go also they are much simpler than the new discos II. i can't see plunking down 30+ for a new vehicle knowing that they depreciate greatly when you drive them off the lot. i am considering this 98 with 36339 miles for 21781. is that a great deal or what. i know that the dealer jacks up the price versus the trade in value. i would also like to know what to look for when driving it. i got a carfax report on several discos, and i noticed that a lot were rental, personal, fleet or commercial leases. is this a danger sign? would this present problems? any advice would greatly be appreciated. you guys sound pretty knowledgeable about your LRs. thanx.

for good price camparisons check out www.lrx.com (Land Rover Exchange). there are always a good number of Disco's there for sale and that will give you a good idea of what kind of deal you may be getting. that price is OK, but could be a little high, but the prices really vary on where you live and who is selling it. Rover dealers are a good place to buy them, but again there prices tend to replect that for sure. i have seen 98's from $18,000 to $24,000 at most LR dealers they are all certified and you can buy an extended warranty for them too. a must if you ask me or many other owners here. check out www.roverguy.com for warranties or Hal Moses at Auto Advantage. you should be able to get one for under $2K for 4 years easily. try and find one with all the previous records. and of course make sure you take it to someone familiar with these trucks to give it a good looking over. good luck.

I bought my 98 LE off of a lease and have had no big issues with it. I bought it late in 98 with 8k miles on it and saved 6 grand doing it. It was 8 months old and the person that had it leased it from the same dealer I got it at so they had all the service records in their computer. The price sounds OK. I live in the Washington D.C. area and they are running about 22K to 26K have seen some for more but, that would be a rip off. I

Ask the dealer, where it was serviced at, to print a service history for you using the VIN number.
That is one thing I would recommend to anyone considering buying a LR. Be an informed buyer.
