My passenger side electric window in my 97 was making a popping noise when I was trying to move it up/down and it would eventually not move at all and sit there making a popping noise.

Some people here suggested that it's the regulator or some bushing.

I took off the interior door panel cover to have a look. When I actuate the electric window button, I can see that the motor is straining and the inside door is starting to flex, but the window isn't moving at all. Eventually, there's a loud "pop" and the inside door snaps back to shape and stops flexing.

This seems like some mechanism which was freely moving before, is now completely stuck and the motor is trying to move it.

My best guess is that the "scissor"-like mechanism which moves the window up and down, is stuck, and the motor is straining to move it. One end of the scissors is attached to the door frame, the other end is geared to the motor. I'm guessing that the motor tries to drive the "frozen" scissors so much, that eventually it pops out of the gear.

So, is this the regulator? What is a regulator? And where is this bushing that is possibly busted? Is a broken bushing why the window mechanism is "frozen" and the motor is straining against it?

I'd really appreciate any detailed description of how to fix this from someone who has done this. I'm good with tools, but not a mechanic or electrician.

Thanks,

Scott

Scott,

The whole assembly is the "regulator" take it out (its tricky you have to position it just right and don't drop the glass) take a look at it. The bushing I have had break is a white disc about 3/4in in diameter.

Scott, Ron's assessment is what I have seen as well. The assembly you have described is the window regulator. No serviceable parts on the regulator, just need to replace it, I think they are around $90 US from the dealer. The regulator, has metal 'arms' with white plastic bushings that seem to break fairly easily. Replacement, can be a little on the tricky side, two people, make it easier. Once you have the new one in place, don't tighten every thing up until you have aligned the glass, as you can break the new regulator, by letting the window down with the glass miss aligned.......ask me how I know :-|

You can find a substitute for the bush if it is what went.

Search, I have posted procedures

I don't have a shop manual. What is the procedure to remove the inside lining so I can get at the regulator? Thanks in advance!

Remove the 2 screws for the door pull-handle.
Remove the 1 screw for the door-latch handle. You have to pull open like you're opening the door, to get to the screw
Unscrew the 4 screws for the speaker grill.
Detach the speaker.

OK, now the fun part. Pry away the door lining. It's held in with blue plastic barbed bolts. If you're lucky, they won't break or they'll just pop off with the door lining, then you'll need to pry them off the door. I found using a wide flat blade screw driver helpful. You may want to put masking tape around your door area where you'll be leveraging against the lining. The blue plastic bolts are barbed really good, so you'll have to pry and pull hard. Be careful though, the door lining appears to be some sort of cast hard-foam material and looks like it could break easily.

The next part, I'm sure I did wrong. Pull away the plastic weather lining. It's stuck in place with some black sticky rubbery caulk. When pulling it off, I had to pull it away from the yellow receiving sockets for the blue barbed bolts. In some cases I ripped a little bit of the weather lining. No biggie, I figure.

...Now, can someone post detailed instructions (or a link to those instructions) for removing the regulator assembly? I've tried to zen in on it, but I'm totally out of sync with the universe.

Scott
